Just purchased my first 2002 Ford Ranger 4.0 L SOHC 4x4
Looking for any suggestions pertaining to maintenance of my newly purchased 2002 Ford Ranger XLT 4.0 L SOHC 4x4. To give some background, the vehicle has 155,200 miles on it and was purchased for $4,000. Known issues are that the radiator coolant is low and is going to need to be changed ASAP, fuel filter needs to be changed, oil and oil filter need to be changed, I also noticed that at about 60 mph and roughly 2k RPM's the A/C seems to stop blowing out cold air for a couple minutes and then returns to blowing out cold air. I'm not too sure if this could be a leak or a sign that the A/C needs to be replaced. This is my first vehicle I've purchased on my own and am open to suggestions on any other things I should be aware of. My goal is to get as many miles out of this ranger as possible as it will mainly be used for commuting to school/work from home (hoping to get to at LEAST 300k miles).
Without knowing the maintenance history, it would be a good idea to replace all drivetrain fluids. You may consider flushing the brake hydraulics and clutch hydraulics (if it has a manual transmission). Certainly check the brakes pads and shoes to make sure they have plenty of life left in them. As to the A/C, I had to replace the A/C cycling switch with somewhat similar issues you are experiencing. It is also possible that it is over-charged. I have over 242K miles and originally planned to keep it at least 300K miles.
One thing I did and you may consider is replacing the timing chain tensioners. They can get weak and cause the guides to vibrate resulting in breaking the guide linings. This results in the infamous timing chain rattle and that requires a major repair. The rear tensioner is not difficult to replace but it need to be done through the passenger side wheel well which require some disassembly. While you are in there it is a good time to replace the spark plugs. The front timing chain tensioner is not difficult either but it requires more disassembly. I had to take off the intake manifold to get to it.
I hope I haven't scared you. I tend to do more maintenance than most people but I also have very reliable vehicles.

Thanks for the advice. As this is my 1st car I plan on taking it to a local trusted mechanic to get their input on what may need to be done on the truck as well! I'll be sure to inform them of your suggestions.
