I'm thinking about getting a K&N cold air intake. Are they worth getting or is it just the same with the stock intake with the airbox mod? Any input would be nice, i need to know before i waste more money. Thanks guys.

ull get more power out of the cold air becasue your getting denser air, and you should also get better gas milage.... open elements are almost always better then boxes...

 

thats not always true, a box keeps hot engine air from entering the intake, which defeats the purpose of an aftermarket intake altogether. if you want to go aftermarket, look at an S&B intake with a sealed filter box. it will flow a lot more than stock and keep the air cool entering the engine

 

the s&b doesnt look like it has the MAF adapter. or is it just not pictured on your website bob?

 

its difficult to see int he photo i have, typically the maf will bolt to the filter flange with S&B kits

 

 

Two pics is worth a thousand words. Every intake I have used lead me back to tried and true- K&N. There's a lot of junk out there. If your budget is in the range of this I would get it.

 

K&N is good, but youre overpaying for the name, S&B manufactures just about every plastic tube intake and cotton gauze filter on the market, other than K&N, what you dont know is that they are rebranded. Dont get me wrong, I had a K&N on my ranger, but the heat shield was less than impressive, and on my F150 i have an S&B intake. 100% top notch quality for a great price, theres just no comparison

much better than an airbox mod...i got mine free since i was a proto-truck for their new product development. I notice more responsive and smoother acceleration...gas mileage i think took a hit on city driving cause the hotter air getting sucked in from the engine when your not moving at good speed. But mpg's get balanced back to stock mpg with the bamachip. Worth the full price?...i say no...if you can get it for $100-$150 id say its probably worth it.

i got mine free too, and i got greg hooked up and jared and others (dunno who)

for free i say the k and n is great, i've got the 77 series on there now and had the fipk before that. didnt notice a difference between the two, and i honestly didnt notice a diff when i put the intake on originally.

when i DID notice a big difference was driving it around for a long time with the intake on, then taking it off, it felt like it wasnt breathing the same, was always lagging

 

Sounds like the S&B is a good product. If it keeps OEM quietness then an older guy like me would like it. That is one benefit of a sealed box. Some of us like to talk to our loved ones on an extended trip. .

If someone could differentiate between the junk and the good stuff then I would agree that you are paying for the K&N name. A person can save $50 and get a sloppy system that is missing components and instructions that may as well be written in Greek. Even within a brand it can happen. I have used some that fit perfect on a Ranger and the same brand made for a Mustang doesn't fit well.

 

wayne you are right on there, i got a volant for my F150 a while back, IMO one of the best kits and highest quality out there. it didnt even have directions.... and they forgot to put Volant on the tube!!

at any rate, an intake will perform better, as long as you can keep it from sucking in hot engine air. where the stock box fails to pull in a LOT of air, it does do a pretty good job of controlling the temp of the air that gets in

 

So is that s&B quiet? Can you hear any hissing?

 

right now ive got the S&B on my 5.4 and it is VERY quiet, same as stock at idle, a little beefier under load, but not as loud as some open filter ones. im like you, i dont want a loud intake, but a sporty tone wouldnt kill me. I think the key to the S&B one is the box it uses to cover the filter, it helps block out some of those annoying noises, and keep cool air coming in, and its not restricting any airflow since ther eis still plenty of room to pull air in where its open. i believe volant uses a box over the fitler as well
