Is my engine the SOHC version ?

First off I'm a newbie and I have a 99 Ranger with the 4.0 v6 EFI. From what I understand by reading the owners manual and other internet sources 99 rangers had the older style cologne motor that only puts out about 160hp. My dad and others have told me it has the overhead cam(SOHC) motor in it that puts out aroud 200hp. Is it possible that my 99 has the SOHC engine ? Thanks for the help in advance !

Unless the motor has been swapped, then it's an OHV, not an SOHC.

4.0 SOHC = 2001+

4.0 OHV = 2000-

i have not seen a 99 with the SOHC unless it was custom. to double check pop the hood there will be a big cover in the center that says 4.0 SOHC if it really is a SOHC

Find the sticky on VIN numbers and decode your VIN. I believe that will tell you.

It says 4.0 efi on the intake manifold, and I decoded it and it's the OHV version. As far as I know their was never an engine swap. I've already added a K&N drop in filter and drilled some holes in the bottom of the airbox, and put a magnaflow muffler on for some added sound. Anybody have any ideas on a good programmer or something else to add a little bit more power ?

The SCT tuners like the various Xcalibrator models and later ones are excellent and we happened to be blessed with some outstanding vendors right on this board. I recommend Underdog Performance (Wayne's company) and the tunes he sells done by Fred (Fredness here on the board).

I have some of Fred's tunes I flashed into my 3.0 and I'm quite happy with the results. I'm not a high performance guy by any means, but I'll take whatever I can get with the 3.0, lol...
