We need more info. Here's the thing, by going from a 03 harness to an 04/05 you have completely different wiring. There are also other things to consider...In order to use the 04/05 wiring you will need to convert ALL the wiring in the truck, including the frame harness. If your truck has 4wabs the new harness needs it also. If your truck has power windows the new harness needs that too. The other problem is the connectors that go thru the firewall and floor are different so you have to change the shape of the holes from square to round, there is also the pats system...

You could also get the wiring and pats system from a 2001-03 with a 4.0 and use that.

Was your truck a flex fuel? If it was you will possibly have a different plug on the fuel pump but an 01-03 harness should plug into the frame harness regardless. You are going to need a 4.0 ecm and the ignition switch and keys. I know the air bag control module is also programed into the ecm but I'm not sure if the rac(remote access controller) will have to be changed. Of course ford can program everything to match but that will cost money...

What about the transmission?? 3.0 and 4.0 use a different bell bolt pattern and the 3.0 trans (manual or automatic) has a lower input torque rating than the 4.0 version.

You have 2 issues, mechanical and electrical. They can be overcome.

Mechanical- It's a bolt in with the right parts. As stated above the trans bell housing is different so you need a 4.0 trans and dipstick. Exhaust is different so you need a crossover for the 4.0. All the accessory mounts are different s well as the power steering pump and starter. Throttle cable and cruise cable(if equipped) are also different.

Electrical- PATS system=Passive Anti Theft System(the proverbial pain in the a** for engine swaps) The ECM(and other components) have the VIN programmed into them as well as the chip that's located in the ignition key. You can put everything together just right and the PATS system will prevent it from even turning over. The solution- get everything including the keys from a parts truck with a 4.0, or take it to the dealer to get it programmed. First things first. Your truck is a 03 and the motor is a 04 or newer=problem. In 2004 Ford changed all the wiring including the instrument cluster on Rangers. The motor will work just fine but you have to decide which way you want to go on wiring. 2004 and newer means basically rewiring the whole truck with newer harnesses. 2001-2003 wiring and you should be able to just change the engine harness, ECM, ignition switch and maybe the restraints module. I am not positive on this and would need to be verified by someone who has done the swap, I have not. Anytime you change harnesses in a Ranger they have to match your trucks equipment suach as 4WABS or RABS(rear anti lock brakes), Power Windows, Cruise...ect.

The dash harness should be the same with a 03 engine harness. If you go with the 04 harnesses it will plug into the doors but you will probably have to change the harness on the frame and that could create an issue with the plug on the fuel pump and emissions canister(located above the spare tire)

BTW nice looking truck.

Been there and done that ... you'd be a lot better off just buying a 01-03 doner truck that has or had the 4.0 SOHC. Option B If the 04/05 Ranger Edge hasn't been crushed yet, you need to get all the stuff off of it or just buy the whole truck.

No matter what way you go you will either need to program your keys into the pats system or get the keys from the truck the ecm is from. BTW you will need a 4.0 ecm from a 01-03 also I don't think you will have to change the under hood harness just the motor harness with an 01-03 4.0 harness.

You're not making this seem harder than it really is. It's a nightmare to do without a doner truck. Ford completely re-wired the whole Ranger in 2004. There were a lot of changes made in 2004 more than most people realize.

I am not 100 % positive but I think that if you use an 01-03 engine harness it will plug into your existing harnesses and work fine but you will still need the 4.0 sohc ecm and keys from the same truck so the pats system will work.
