Hey All,
Can I change my oil filter without losing oil or do I need to drain it?
Call me crazy but ......I changed the oil last week and couldn't get the filter off so now I just want to change the filter.

You'll lose what oil is in the filter , but nothing more.
Maybe 1/3 of a quart. You'll be fine.

 

Actually common fleet maint., they do oil analysis and if oil OK just change filters and replace volume in filter(s), you filter should hold approx. 1 qt.

Change filter then start engine, after 2-3 minutes turn off engine, let oil drain back (3-5 minutes) check oil level and top-off. Better to be a bit low than to overfill.

 

I use Mobile 1, chg my oil and filter, 3K +/- later chg the filter and 3K +/- more chg the oil and filter again !
Always have done this, works for me.

 

Thanks guys. I'll give it a shot. PITA if I had to drain the oil. I'm going to try the pop bottle with the bottom cut out to keep from bathing in the oil when taking out the filter.

You can get it from the top so you won’t get any oil on you, except your hands.
Put a large container under the area of the truck where the filter is and go for it, easy do !

 

Too easy. I didn't use the pop bottle. With a 1 foot socket extension and a filter wrench I unscrewed it and dropped it into my oil catch basin. I almost think they have it on an angle so it drips straight down ............. but I doubt they planned that.
