Icon5 Oil Leak

Fellow Ranger Owners,

I have a 2004 Ranger 4x4, automatic, FX4 Package,4.0l SOHC V6, 178,000 miles. My problem is that yesterday all of the sudden I have an oil leak. Not sure where it is coming from. It looks like it is coming from the bellhousing and dripping through the mating seal where the starter is mounted. Oil has been slung all along the underside of the truck on the crossmember. Can anyone advise as to where this leak might possibly be?

The amount of oil reads like a pressure leak.

Oil pan and valve cover gaskets are gravity leaks so the amount of oil leaked is minimal.

Oil filter and housing, oil pressure sender, and front and rear main seals are all places for pressure leaks, which can put out alot of oil while engine is running.

In the rear of the motor inside the bell housing is almost always the rear main seal.
The seal itself is only $10, but requires the transmission to be removed and then the flexplate(automatic) to get access to change it.

See if you can clean up the oil from the under side of the engine and get a better idea of where the leak is.

And is it motor oil or transmission oil?
