4.0 ohv performance

i have a 98 xlt 5 speed and im wanting to get more performance out of it atleast to where i can beat those hondas with an intake and a fart box, i currently have a K&N intake system, and a magnaflow 2.5 single in/ dule out muffler dumped at the muffler. im running 32 BFG MT's on stock gears

other than a tuner what should i do next to get more performance?
the only reason i say no tuner is beacuse i need to buy the tuner, racers package, and pay 360 for the custom tune for my local tuner to tune it....
so im thinking i should do as much as i can b4 i get it tuned, that way i only have to pay once

Thanks
-Andy

what is your stock gearing?

i'd say regear to some 4.10's if you dont already have them. maybe 4.56's but i think those might be overkill for only 32's. also im not sure how they are for the 4.0, but maybe an underdrive pulley kit? tune should be last though, because you want to tune for your mods so you get the most out of them.

Honestly?

SOHC conversion.

Don't think you will find anything else out there that alone will get you a 50 BHP and 20 lb-ft gain, outside of forced induction. You can pick up a used engine with around 100,000 miles for around $750 to $850.

Might as well go with a 5.0 for that much...

Maybe if you got some mix & matched McDonalds yellow and red sparkplug wires and put a coffee table on your tailgate for downforce you will beat them...What I mean to say is the best answers for your question are already in this thread...rear gears, pulley, efan, headers and a tune in that order...(getting a LSD when you change your gears wouldnt hurt) If you cant beat some ricers with all that, you should look into an automatic transmission.

On my OHV I did
K&N FIPK, BBK Throttle Body, Borla Exhaust, 2.25 all the way, and I got the Bamachips tuner. I also have 4:10 gears with 35's. It really made a difference man! I would still like to do UD pulleys and I would like to do an E-fan. Def. some 4:56s. You can make the OHV do work, you just can't expect the world out of it. It has some potential and it has its places in power where its useful.

The 4.0 won't keep up with a honda thats actually built. Im sorry to all you honda haters out there! Now the ones that just have a fart can and nothing else done to it yes but you should be doing that stock....

^^ if your going 33s and you dd your truck i would go 4.10s then get a efan and all your other stuff maybe a 422 cam then get a tuner with a tune with all your mods in it so you can get the most out of it

I think gears would be great to do for sure man. I want to do gears bad..that will take a lot of strain off of your drivetrain as well. I think as far as "bolt on" things the tuner really is the best to go with. The intake..efan..pullies..they all make a big difference but I really think I would start with the gears.
