K&N Airfilter?

i havent yet done it myself but ive been hearing good things aobut the kn air filters... are you going to replace the filter in your air box or do one of the cone ones?? my friend has a hoda civic and he has a aem intake and it sounds "ok" when he revs it up its like a sound of the air being sucked in. i plan on doing the cone b/c itll look cool i hope but if you want your engine to breathe better id do it. hope that helps...

It isn't the oil that does it. It is the way they flow comared to paper. Oddly enough the factory system was designed with paper elements in mind, it's calibrated for it. Put something in with less restriction and it changes the character of the air flow. It causes stumbling at idle and even light throttle tip in stumbling at speed.

Im a bit confused here.. Are the idling problems around when you have the drop in filter?? or are you guys saying just having a different intake in general sometimes give problems with studdering, etc... I'v had the K&N FIPK intake for a few months now... hasnt givin me any problem at all!

In general...stock i could do a burn out by stomping the accelerator but now it wont because it studders a little as if it wasnt getting enough fuel or too much, but at higher RPM's It will run its butt off. Also it is alittle louder. Im putting a flowmaster on tomarrow which will exit right infront of the rear tire. Ill let you know if it helps at all.
BTW... does the intake effect the emissions??? I put mine on after i did it so i dont know if it will pass or not.

You can do one of two things. Either get the full kit or the drop in. Personally I believe the K&N let's in more dirt and so I don't use it. You'll find people pro and con, people who say they've run it in 42642 cars for 98 years and never once had a problem yada yada. Fine, congrats. I'm still not using it. But those are your options.

Oiled gauze filters, like the K&N, can hit you from both directions. If you oil it regularly, it can contaminate the MAF hot wire and get oil in the IAC which attracts dirt particles.
On the other hand, since a K&N relies on trapped filter oil to catch the dirt, neglecting to clean and oil it regularly allows more dirt to enter the engine.
Here's a chart comparing the characteristics of different classes of air filters which were tested using a standard Society of Automotive Engineers procedure. Note that the K&N has good flow characteristics but does not stop dirt/dust particles as well as paper or oiled foam filters.
K&N's were introduced many years ago for race engines where short term power is more important than longevity. Their introduction preceded the common use of hot wire mass airflow (MAF) measurement devices in production engines.
I have used K&N’s in dirt bikes where the filter is usually cleaned and oiled for each outing. I wouldn't use one in my truck.

Just use the damn K&N. I have yet to see a thread about rangers with severe engine problems or premature wear because of a K&N filter.
If it does happen to mine, i'll let you know. I run a MAC intake and i off-road all the time...But i clean the filter when it starts getting dirty and re-oil it. I have a Pro-M MAF. No problems with the oil either.
