Starting problems...HELP!!

Starting problems...HELP!!

I bought a used 01 ranger w/ 35k on it about 6 weeks ago.

Lately, (past 3 days) when i try and start it after it has been sitting for over an hour, it never starts on the 1st crank. I have to try 2-3 times before it starts.
If i stop my car for short periods of time, to run into a store, it starts up fine.
This tells me that its not my starter, other wise it would do it everytime.
I am thinking MAYBE a my fuel pump, or spark plugs (probably not plugs, but someting to check)??? but i donno.
Tomorrow i am going to buy some injector cleaner that you dump in your gas tank and see if that does anything.

Is there a common problem that i should no about??

Does anyone no what it could be? HELP!!!!!!

BTW, i took her off road a few times in some deep pits. Donno if that has anything to do with it.

And i dont think it is the battery, because it sounds like a strong crank, but im going to have to check that tomorrow as well.

Sometime the fuel pump will get worn or the fuel pump check valve will leak causing this symptom.

Try this test. The next time, before you start it in the morning, turn the key on for a few seconds without turning the starter. Then turn it off. Repeat this about ten times, each time without starting the engine. Every time you key it up like this, the fuel pump will run for about 2 seconds to prepressurize the fuel lines and fuel rail.

Now try to start it. If it starts quickly after doing this, it means that you have some sort of fuel delivery or fuel pressure problem. I would have the fuel filter changed first. If that doesn't do it, you may need a new fuel pump assembly.

my old man told me to do the same, but i forgot to do it today. Im going to have to remember that tomorrow.

ok, so if i put my key "on" and wait 5 seconds, then start my truck, it starts fine.
Im guessing this is the feul pump, right??

If it starts fine after 5 seconds its just because you should wait for the fuel pump to prime...other wise its trying to start with no gas.

i no thats what it is doing, but it should do that.
i should be able to put the key in and start it right up.


because i have to wait for the pump to prime, does this mean my fuel pump is going bad??

A good fuel pump does not need to prime on every start. It has an anti-drainback check valve that should prevent that.
