swapping out my 2.3l for a 4.0?

I just picked up my new project 1995 ranger 2wd.. it has the 8 plug 2.3l and it runs like crap... I plugged in my scanner and there are no codes and no CEL and I dont really care to troubleshoot it so I figured its time to swap the 4cyl out for a 4.0... I debated on going with the 5.0l but it seems to be much more work... how much work is it to swap out to the 4.0? is it basically just plug and play? also I have no idea what needs to be done with the trans... any ideas would be greatly appreciated.... thanks in advance!

not too familair with it but your trans will not bolt up, you will need a motor, trans, pcm, wiring harness, mounts, radiator etc

^^^ Basically everything you would need to take from an Explorer to do a 5.0 swap.

ya I kinda figured I was gonna need all that stuff... I was wondering more about if the motor mounts bolt in to the ranger? how much wiring there is to deal with and things like that... I have done quite a few toyota motor swaps so I am not too worried was just wanting to get somewhat of an idea before I dig into this... thanks guys!

You can put 4.0 mount in there, and you can put 5.0 mounts in there too. IMHO, just go to the 5.0, about the same amount of work, about the same initial cost, more motor and more aftermarket support.

ok now what about wiring? how much splicing is needed for either swap? I was debating on the 5.0 the only issue there is the fact I can get a 4.0 all day long with 5 speed trans for about $500 for both... the 5.0 is looking more like a little more... do I need an explorer 5.0 or will the mustang motor work?

Mustang motor will work, but you will need the Explorer wiring harness, so it's just easier to get them together.
