ticking sound when first starting?

my ranger has almost 120K miles on it. when i first start it (this has been happening over the last few days). it makes a noticable ticking sound, which goes away after a minute. last night i had my truck up to ~80-90mph (RPMs were at 3000 in O/D). i decelerated to turn onto my road and i heard the same ticking sound. ive been told it is from oil not fully circulating where its supposed to go (which im about to check it right now, just letting it warm up).

i can also hear the same thing, but not as noticable im my dads truck (F350 w/ a 460 big block) when i accelerate fairly fast.

fram filters are junk, sorry to tell you. search if you want.
go out and buy a motorcraft filter (murrys autoparts sells em) and see if you still have the noise.

I think a piece of tissue paper shoved in the hole would work better than a fram.

btw the ticking sound is because of the filter, when you start the truck theres no oil in the filter because it all drains back into the oil pan, so basically it has no oil for about 5 or more seconds.

fram products = junk.
end of story, plus motorcraft is cheaper!

i run a motorcraft oil filter and motorcraft oil and i have no problems.
its about $19 for everything to change my oil..
if ford puts there name on it, then it has to be upto OEM specs.

I agree with using the Motorcraft oil and filter. My friend works for Ford and they recommend using only motorcraft oil and filters because they're better and made for the use on fords. You are useing a filter that is made for the general backyard mechanic. I had the same ticking on my old ranger and I was told it was the lifters! The 2.9l engine! Bought new heads, cam, lifters 2x's, oil pump, injectors, and still the sound was there. Motorcraft oil and filter is alot cheaper than buying all that crap for a simple problem. Start there and see if it works for you! HTH, Vinny.
