Whirling noise from engine still bothering me!
I think my truck has made a whirling noise from the time I bought it. Does it under medium and hard throttle and only at certain RPM's. I have replaced the IAC valve and had it checked for vac. leaks. Nothing. It did find that I had a cracked throttle body, which was replaced. After $500 I still have the same noise.
I gave up on it and just lived with it, but now I want it fixed. Could it be my PCV valve? I'm out of ideas. Thanks if you can help.

Try getting a cheap stock air filter and see how that works.
Can you locate where the noise is coming from? Try having a friend rev the engine while you have the hood open and listen/look for the noise.

With a generic description like you mention.. you need to start eliminating one system at a time to weed it out.
Try removing the air filter and running it. (no dust environment of coarse)
If it's still there? Try removing the belt and doing it again. (for no more than a 1/2 mile)
Stuff like this. Try to rule out differing things and narrow down where the noise is coming from and under what circumstances it happens. (hot oil / cold oil, ect...)

It cost you 500 bucks to have the throttle body repalced? Its a 140 buck part assming you have the 4.0L...but even a 3L its only 213 bucks! Check the air inlet to your air box. Ive seen them get misaligned and make all sorts of noises. It could also be your fan clutch.
What about a whinning, like the fan is just flying in revolutions? Now that summers here again and i'm running a/c none stop it sounds like a semi truck taking off with all the fan revolutions? I cant hear the engine over it? When it sounds like that i cant spin the tires ? I have a 4.0L and can light em up when i want. Any ideals? Not only when a/c is on but only when its been on for 15 minutes or so. This is the second summer i've had it and i took it to the dealer last summer and they said its fine. My 2003 ranger never did it but it had a2.3. Just asking if anyone has same or had same issue? I've been driving it with a light foot and i'm happy to see 20MPG again on the freeways with summer gas.
