2001 Ranger V8 Swap

I have a 2001 Ford Ranger Side step and have been thirsting for more power because the 4.0 SOHC thats in it atm feels somewhat gutless. My first question involving this is, what would be the best engine to put in that would fit without having to change absolutely everything but still get me a good bang. Second question what vehicles have this engine in it that I would be able to pull. third question, to put said motor in, what would all have to be changed or rerouted. Fourth question, for that engine, what supporting mods would need to be done? Tranny etc

1 +2 : The most direct swap would be a 5.0L from an Explorer as they share chassis and so many other parts.

3 + 4: RESEARCH!!! On the first page of the section you posted this thread in, there is countless threads that pertain directly to your goal and the truck you're using. New trans is required, custom tuning is required, custom exhaust required, etc/blahblahblah. Best suggestion I can personally give is to research research research. The 5.0L swap is the most common and most covered v8 swap for a 98+ Ranger there is.

I dont know if it is just me, but I seem to be having trouble finding out like detailed information on anything around my year, I have decided on a an explorer v8 i believe i read a 99-01 explorer with the 302(?). from what I read the mounts are pretty much a straight over swap(?). I am also wondering about transmissions, I am looking for a transmission that will work for the explorer v8 and have a bit of performance aspect too it as I am planning on racing the truck.

01 FX4 level2 engine replacement

Is there a replacement for the 4.ol sohc that's available right now.? I've been searching since 06/2022 and have been told by many remanufacturing companies its going to be another 8 months. I want my truck back and if there other engine replacement options I'd like to hear from you! Performance upgrades are welcome to respond but I want serious options to get my truck back on the road!

Welcome to the forum

You can have your 4.0l SOHC engine rebuilt by local machine shop, better than unknown rebuilder

You can get a used 4.0l SOHC, try https://www.car-part.com/
Used YOUR zipcode

You can use a 2001-2011 4.0l SOHC, 2WD or 4WD doesn't matter, don't need the internal balancer early 4WD came with, Ford dropped them in 2004
You may need to swap intakes to match 2001 engine wiring harness, but thats all

On a used engine I would replace the two long chain tensioners on spec, use Motorcraft only, also give the thermostat housing a good look, you can get a metal version now, the stock plastic ones had a tendency to crack
