damn man, why didnt you just buy a 4.0 08 and SC that. you'd have saved about 10k right off the bat.

I mean more power to ya but thats going to be more work than you can imagine in that new of truck. if you have the cash, skill, and time Just try and stuff a 4.6 in it or somthing. I wish I would have. BTW I used to have a 3.0

Try Tom Morana V6 racing engines or Underdog performance. They carry alot of V6 performance parts for the 3.0. Google both of them and you should find what you're looking for. But of course you do know that by doing those mods say goodbye to your engine warranty.

I'd like to revive this thread, because I am in the exact same boat as nikki is: '08 Sport 2wd 3.0. The truck looks awesome and I love it. I just really want to get a bigger engine in there, which I would mod more down the line.
Only BIG problem is I have little to no experience in swapping motors, and the little I do was downsizing an old 88 chevy custom deluxe from a 5.7 to a 4.3, which wasn't very difficult.
I have about 10k to mess around with, (potentially another 3k when I get back from the sandbox and sell my jetta).

where i live we have specialty shops that deal with this type of thing, with 13k I dont see any problem having even the new 5.0 coyote put in, id find a shop and ask them what there opinion is and get a rough estimate quote. My personal goal is ecoboost but thats not for a long time :p

people on here wont really be able to help you out beyond that in this case

Gotcha. I was going to get the opinions from a number of fab shops and see what they would do... but I am going to play around with it myself, or at least try.
Going to get my study on for the next 2 months to basically memorize my service manual, and see if I can't do something. I'll submit this on the projects page once I begin.

I was just posting here to get some ideas or general "don't do XX because of YY." but NOT don't do it because it's too hard/expensive.

Since it's already been brought back from the dead, Adrian I know the new 5.0's are bad *** but why not just go with the old 5.0? The only reason I say this is they make everything for them and just like chevy 350's you will be able to find part till the end of time for them. Idk. I get why it would be nice to go to the new 5.0 just cuz how badass they are. Matched with the good fuel economy they get. Either way the new ones would be sick. I also love your Idea of the new ecoboost 3.5's...Damn those things are sick! You know they are gonna have tons of performance/tuning for them. So much potential.

I was just using it as an example of what can be done.. I would go with the new 5.0 over the ohv 5.0's just out of cool factor if i had 13k towards a motor swap

Your right though can't beat the old 5.0 best bang for your buck

the 5.0 doesn't make a lot of power stock. The 5.0 makes 215hp at the crank and the ranger makes 207hp with the 4.0 i wouldn't waste your time just supercharge the 4.0

I don't have a 4.0. I have the little 3.0 that they put in the 08's.

That doesn't matter, it's all about potential and I'll bet you can't post one success story about supercharged 4.0's :p

True. The improvement to the start of the process and the potential available are the main reasons I want to roll the 5.0.

I completely agree. Plus why spend 5k + just to get like 300hp and be almost at your max limit, plus worry about how well the 4.0 is gonna hold up. Not a good feeling. with the old 5.0 anytime you feel like going fast you just to more bolt on's just build the motor up for whatever you want to do with it.

I also agree the new 5.0 would totally be an amazing cool factor.

P.S. To the OP. This is coming from the old person perspective in me, but 13k is a good amount of money for someone young like you. I'm assuming if it is an 08 you are making payments? Unless you bought it cash. Which I would praise you for being able to do so if you are under 20 or so. Anyway back to my point. A 5.0 swap, or any swap for that matter is going to be expensive regardless of what you do or what motor you are going to use. Now I know that the 3.0 is slow. Not gonna lie. I used to have a 01' xlt ext cab 2wd 3.0 and it was very slow. I will tell you looking back that out of all my rangers, that was hands down my favorite. I also will say that I trust the 3.0 vs the sohc 4.0 any day of the week. 4.0 ohv not included. those are great little motors too. This is just my opinion though. Moving on and back to my point. If you are doing payments no matter what it is, a car payment is one of the best and fastest ways to build your credit. I know that might not really mean anything to you right now. I will later on though. You might think about either holding off on the swap for just a little while or just use maybe half the money to do it. I'm sure you can swap in a old 5.0 for less than 6k. find and old used motor anywhere. Then do the fab work. Or find a good back yard mechanic shop that is trust worthy. One of them good old boys type shop that will do it for way cheaper than a performance shop. More or less cuz they just want to see it done. Either way. With the rest of that other half maybe my double payments or a hundred dollars more a month. Or even just money to have in your bank and collect that little bit of that %age for anything over 5k in your bank. Use it for a rainy day or in case you are in a rough spot with bills so you can fall back on that money. Either way that is just my 10 cents....Sorry this was so long. (OP, IT IS WORTH THE READ FOR YOU.)

I absolutely agree with everything you talked about above, Joe. Actually, I have many superiors who discussed the same thing with me and we created a plan to work around it and am very lucky to have those people who help me out with things like this. I have a savings account that I have 6months worth of all bills I would need to survive in the event something happens that puts me out the door. These funds are not calculated in the above equations. Also, I am making above minimum payments by around $80 (about 26 months left at the current rate and a promotion coming in the next 5 months, of which the raise goes 40% into savings, 40% into truck payment, 20% for QoL). I still have a little less than 3 years in the military, so this truck should be well paid off by the time I'm out.
But, as this is a long winded post too:
Yes. I have made sure I can handle the weight of this and still make strides forward with the rest of my life - and thank you very much for the concern. I am going to do some total estimates with both the old 302 and the new and compare the two.

There is, see the plus/minus at the bottom right of each post?

Anyway... If you have 13k to spend. You can get and older camaro or mustang for 3 or 4 grand, pull the engine and everything out, rebuild the engine, and swap all the bits and pieces into a ranger.

And buy a $500 beater to drive in the mean time.

I would think you would have enough to fab or have someone fab mounts and everything, maybe evn install it for you. Even then I wouldn't be surprised to go over budget.

^ I agree. I Don't even see it getting even close to 13k though. Like I said I'm sure you can do it for less than half of that. Or even 8k would get you a really good set up. Oh and also good call on the plus, minus. Isn't that for props though?

Nikkistang90,

The 3.0 is not a performance motor at all...but thats just my opinion. I think you'll just be throwing money down a hole trying to break 200whp. You have a relatively new truck, I wouldn't be looking to do anything crazy to that. If you had an older ranger that you were okay with making a frankentruck out of, that would make more sense.

All that being said, if you are looking for a line on some performance 3.0 gear. Tom Morana Racing is for Ford V6 guys.
