302 Swap Info Needed!

Just exploring my options here as the engine is out of the truck and waiting on the insurance company's final estimate.

Most of the info I found on the 302 swap was for older rangers. I'm trying to find some info on a swap into the gen5(i.e. my 03 LII). I wanna use my current transmission and transfer case set-up. Just an idea floating around in my head. I also need to know what transmission model I have.

Given that your truck is an "03 and still has a pretty decent resale value. Not to mention you will want to keep it legal, I owuld suggest keeping it a v6. Unless you wanted nick to do the rebuild.

I believe I can get away with it if I use an '03 or newer 302.

for emissions you have to use a '03+ 5.0.....which would mean a creat engine since no vehicle after '01 came with a 5.0.......also you will not be able to use your transmission and transfer case.....a 5.0 will destroy your transmission.....make it look like a wad of paper.....

you will have to get an explorer with a v8 in it and set both the Explorer and your truck next to each other......then as you pull out 1 part off the Expy put it on your Ranger......that way you have EVERY part you need all the way down to the wiring harness and sensors........

it will take a lot of time.....it is NOT a weekend project.....and since you are on the road a lot, it will take longer.......and i doubt you will get a shop to do the swap...

I talked to my mechanic about it and he said it's pretty labor intensive from what he's heard but if I brought in a donor vehicle or the major components he could work something out. =]

I never said I was doing the work lol It would take years!

when you do something like that, you have to have it inspected....they run the vin on the truck, then pull the engine vin and then match years.....

Check out rangerpowersports there is alot of info on the V8 board for late ranger swaps with explorer stuff.

I did this on my 1999 took me three weeks, primarily weekends and i am a perfectionist. I also lost a week due to NAPA shipping me a Modine radiator with a 1" hole in the core! Easy swap, just some subtle intricaies with the model year explorers and rangers. Read through all the sticky's.

Here is a link to get you started:

http://www.rangerpowersports.com/for...d.php?t=170886

Nother on 2001 wiring, which *may* be applicable to your 2003. Again, some subtle, but potentially time consuming differences.

It was due to a repair(well, lack thereof) by the dealer after a comprehensive claim I had open with my insurance policy.

Wow, just got done sorting through a small portion of information, among several pages, and decided that there's no way I can do this. Wayyyy too much downtime and there's no way it will pass my emissions standards. I've also looked into the power that 98+ 302(stock) swap produce and it's quite dissappointing.

New thread started......In 4.0 Section =\

Don't let max power numbers confuse you - especially HP numbers. The toqrue and torque under the curve are the numbers that you feel.

I saw a GREAT difference between the 4.0L and 302 when I did my swap. Plus, now that I am driving a 2005 with the SOHC 4.0L, I am even more missing the power of my 1999 351W S/C truck, while it is in "build".

I know, I saw decent torque numbers. That's what I'm most concerned about. The torque. Anyone got a good link for a diesel swap? lol

Best Diesel is the South American Ranger Powerstroke 3.0L I4. REally nice numbers on that. It is made by international of Mexico. Check out their site for details. Problem is it does not bolt to any of our North American transmissions and the SA trans does not like the cold temps. Plus, I have never seen a used one here in the state or on eBay and only seen new - like $7K!

Another option is the Cummins 4BT. I have seen pictures / link to one in a Jeep for sure and maybe an explorer - can't remember. TRS - diesel page my have some links.

Also consider a Mercedes/Dodge, Iveco, Nissan, etc. light duty truck I4. Or go whole hawg and get a VW V10 Diesel from the Toureg at ~550ft-lbs torque!

Isn't it easier and cheaper to supercharge your 4.0?

After the insurance company replaced the 4.0..........yes. lol

I've got the new 4.0 in and a supercharger is in the truck's future. Not in the very near future though.
