Hi, I was going to go that route with the adaptor but was told the tranny needed to be opened by tranny shop to put the new spline shaft in for the adaptor? this after someone else said the shaft was a butt shaft that simply went on end of tranny and then it fit my ranger transfer case? what is it u have, not to be a pita..lol

No problem at all. I just sold it the other day and forgot to say that on here. I also thought it just went on the end of the shaft befor i bought it. But thats not the case, the whole transmission needs to be tore down to get to the final output shaft. When i realized this i decided to just go the route of the bw4406 from an f150 rather than pay to have my transmission tore apart. It shifts excellent so i didnt want to monkey with taking it out and to my tranny guy. Also the adapter is not the correct length to use the ranger drive shafts. They have 2 different length ones neither of which is correct length. So i thought it was a no brainer to go bw4406. i went with the manual shift. I wanted the lever but the electric shift one is plug n play also. And the stock f150 front drive shaft works, I believe 97 to 03 with a v6 and maybe the 4.6 v8. i know the 5.4 is different. I bought a whole 97 f150 with a V6 and the manual shift just because i got a great deal on a rusty one. I suggest the bw406, i have heard some guys had to move their engine and transmission over but when i put it in to see how far i would have to move it over mine was perfect. I just had a new driveshaft made, tube and all cuz my f150 rear shaft couldnt be shortened. it is made wierd. each end is smaller than our ranger and then the tube enlarges after about 6 inches. Hope this helps you a little.

hi, The awd out of the 97 mountaineer donor, except my ranger has manual hubs so I'm not locked in all the time. biggest difference I guess being only one gear not a low but she never see any mud, and living in the burgh not much snow either. The whole purpose of my swap was the 3.0 just couldn't handle the 33s..lol. I have same tranny as you so she runs pretty decent. did you do headers or no? ive seen lots of threads with guys asking what headers will really work, A few say they will but don't, I saw one guy said he went with mustang manifolds that are tubular like headers but short so they fit but I may have the gt40p heads, did I write that correct, I'm reading they are better performer heads. but some headers wont fit them. Hey...Merry xmas to ya

Merry xmas to u also. I just have the stock crappy manifolds still. I have read on the explorer forum that 95 to 97 1/2 have gt 40 heads and from their to 01 have the gt40-p heads. I read its stamped either gt or gtp on the side of the head but have not looked at mine to verify if that is true. A good place to read about headers is the explorer forum, their is guys on their that have tried all kinds of stuff. The way the spark plugs are is what makes a tight fit i believe. I was thinking about going to the 1.7 roller rockers but some say its noisy.

I found a site Five.Oh Info : The Ultimate Ford GT40 and GT40P Cylinder Head FAQ gt40/gt40p cylinder head frequently asked questions. It tells what years and what vehicles have which heads. It says their is hardly any flow difference between the two.
