AOD Oil

Can anyone give a definitive answer to the question of what oil to run in an AOD? Mine is from an '89 Mustang GT. The dipstick says Type F, but I thought they ran Mercon. Don't want to make an expensive mistake. Thanks!

I've always been taught to follow what the manual says. In this case, I'd find a manual for an 89 Mustang GT and see what it says.

Big expense, the AOD holds 12 quarts, lol

In 2006 Ford stated that the new Mercon V formula was good to use in 1980 and up Ford automatics, including the AOD

Thanks Guys. I did just that. Went back to the guy I got the tranny from and found a manual - Mercon it is! Turns out the shop that swapped out the old FMX put in the old dipstick - had an idea that might have been the case.
