general v8 and 4x4 question

I'm new to the truck scene. I've come from driving a v6 Firebird, so I know how engine swaps work as I wanted to throw in a 350 but never got around to doing it. But I do have a question reguarding truck swaps.

Now just say I want to swap in a 302 into my Ranger. (I have a 1999 Ranger with 3.0, 4x4, 5 speed) Is keeping my four wheel drive a possibility? I've never had a 4x4 vehical before, so I don't fully understand how it works just yet. Just say I found a late 90's early 00's 4x4 Explorer with a 302 in it, and it is 4x4, could everything be swaped to my Ranger so I'd have a v8 and still be able to keep my four wheel drive?

Or lets say I find an early 90's Mustang GT. Would that 302 be able to be thrown right in and still keep my existing four wheel drive?

Can anyone direct me to a website maybe on how four wheel drive works? Where does a front driveshaft come from?

I'm always up for learning something new. I've had a few cars before, this is my first truck and I can't wait to see what all I can do with it. Thanks for being patient with a semi-newb.

You have a 99 ranger? Basically you have the easiest vehicle to swap a 5.0 into. Search the forums, EACH thread i've explained, so search search search! :-)

if you are going to swap, get a wrecked explorer with the 5.0 in it and completely swap everything.....buy the whole vehicle not just the engine.!
