2000 Ranger V8 swap major wiring issue - need EVTMs

I was under the impression that the 99 Explorer 5.0L to 00 Ranger 3.0L was pretty much plug-n-play as far as wiring goes. Much to my dismay, this is far from true. When I turned the key a couple of weeks ago and found that I had no fuel pump prime, I suspected there would be a problem.

What I found is that of the 3 bulkhead connectors on the driver side firewall, all 3 are loaded with wires on the Explorer, but only 2 connectors are loaded on the Ranger (see pics below). On top of that, I found that almost none of the color coding matches between like positions from Explorer to Ranger, so I need schematics if I hope to ever finish this job....

I spent 12 hours yesterday pinning out the Explorer bulkheads thinking that I could probably then pin out the Ranger bulkheads and move the few wires that needed it. Within the first 15 wires on the Ranger, there were 5 wires I couldn't find yet and every position between the Explorer and Ranger bulkheads appear to be different.

The 2000 Ranger that I'm swapping has torsion bars up front rather than coils and my HVAC control is different than my other 2000 Ranger, so I believe that I may have 2001 interior wiring. As that may not be true either, I really needs EVTMs of these bulkheads for:

2000 Ranger 3.0L 5 speed 2WD
2001 Ranger 3.0L 5 speed 2WD
1999 Explorer or Mountaineer 5.0L AWD

What's the manufacturing date of the 2000 with torsion bars? It's probably a late 2000 which like you found out, is just like 2001 wiring. Does the truck have PATS? That's going to be the biggest issue you might run in to.

^^^ This is why he's messing with wires under the dash. The connectors on the firewall are easier accessed from under the dash.

If I understand correctly, you're suggesting I buy Ford EVTMs for 3 different vehicles which I'll use once. That would set me back a considerable chunk and it's not something I can afford to do at this point. I'm pretty sure at least a couple of guys out there have at least one of these and could help me out....

This is where it's odd... Yes, I have PATS and it's got the module in the same location as the 99 Mountaineer just behind the PS airbag, so if it's truly 2001, wouldn't this not be the case? I may have the ultimate bastard!

Hmmm. Well if what I'm looking at is correct, it's strictly a 2000 PATS system. 2001 the PATS box is located physically in the same area behind the air bag, but it's called the "Vehicle Security Module" unlike 2000 where that same module is called simply "PATS Module".

i still dont understand. there is no need to go under the dash AT ALL for the swap. unless ur screwin with pats and to change the TACH wire. forget messin with all that crap

It sounds like you are trying to swap the whole engine bay harness. All you really need to swap is the engine harness itself, and the wiring for it is pretty simple.

The harness you get from the exploder should end at the rear of the engine, with two large plugs. One for the computer and the large, square plug that ties into the chassis harness.

You know, I'm so used to the damn Mustangs where you have to swap the whole engine bay harness and headlight harnesses, that I assumed it was a must to swap everything. If I don't need to swap that out, it saves me a serious pile of time. Glad I didn't let my 3.0L bay harness go when I sold the engine.... I guess I'll just remove a bunch of wiring that I already installed....

Swapped the harness back in last night in a hurry because I had to get up at 4:30AM to work another 12 hour shift. I didn't connect every last thing up because I didn't have the time to mess with it and the harness just doesn't hit everything, but I immediately got fuel, but no starter engaging or spinning yet. I'll look into that tonight.

Did you guys have any difficulty with the engine connector to chassis harness/connector being kind of tight, like the chassis harness from the 3.0 is a little short for the 5.0?

My 4.0 to 5.0 connector was tight. It is because the connectors were mounted in different locations between the two. but that bolt will pull them together nicely. just get some slack in the harness if you can

Did you swap in the clutch jumper plug in place of the original clutch switch under the dash?? You have to do that when you convert manual to auto...

Yes, it was very tight to my 4.0 harness and I had to reposition the engine bay harness to get it to connect. I have since lengthened the engine harness about 12" to relieve it and make a proper connection.

As for 2000 versus 2001:

The model year determines the equipment so a 2000MY is a 2000MY and a 2001MY is a 2001MY. However, a 2001MY Ranger could easily have a build date in calendar year 2000 since model changeover is typically in July or August. Consult the emissions label under the hood or use a VIN decoder to be sure of the model year.

There was only one 2000MY Ranger that had both 2WD and torsion bars and that was the Trailhead.

Sorry, not true. The 2001 Ranger doesn't have a standalone PATS module - the functions were taken over by the PCM.

You only need 2 and they are available on eBay for about $10 each. Be sure to also search under "Wiring Manual" for 99 or 2000 because the name was changed from EVTM between the 98 and 99 model years.
