Icon10 Three Oh Two!

I finally got myself a 302, it came out of a friends '79 F150(he swapped it for a 351) so he let me take it and said I can just pay it off when I can, which in total will only be $200, and he threw in the C6 Tranny for free, I started tearing it apart this morning and here's what I have so far

It looks half way decent from the outside....

And then we open it up and find out how bad it really is

And some shiny new tools for the project :)

I'm still working on it, I have to get the pistons, lifters, cam, and crank out, I'll get more pics of that as I progress.

I'm going to take the block to a shop and have them clean it out and make sure it's not cracked, and I'll have them rebuild the heads, I'm going to get all new internals, and the tranny is also going to a shop and I'll just use that for a while until I can get a T5 or T56, or a C6 with o/d because I drive 20 miles one way to work and I need the o/d, oh yeah and it's going to be stroked to 347 :-)

Nice. Just a moderate rebuild with a set of GT-40 heads and an E303 cam and that motor will scream! Not to mention that these little 302's love some giggle juice...

You are going to love it and it is a fun project. And its not nearly as bad as everyone thinks.

it depends on how expensive those heads are, my budget is limited and I can't even start to buy stuff for the engine for a few months, I know that I want a bigger cam and a few other goodies that I have to save up for

nope looks like it dropped a head gasket at one point. i think the gt40 heads would be perfect, just spend the coin and get it all machined and cleaned up man

yeah you're right, plus it's cheaper than buying a complete new engine, that was going through my head before i picked this up, the first thing I need to do is start researching shops around here that'll do all this work

camshafts for street cars are very bad for off-road vehicles

you should look for a camshaft that is meant for low end torque not high end horsepower

thanks for the input guys, I'll check out that e303 cam today, I'm making a list of everything I'm going to get and I'll post on here when I do, and it's not an offroad truck, its 2wd so it's gonna be a street truck, I'm gonna tub the rear wheel wells and get some 12-14" drag tires

Yeah that would be perfect. And you can find the heads used for less than $300. Just have them gone through and freshened up, and then port/polish them.

Here's some more pics, we tore down the bottom end and we had some trouble with the distributer and the freeze plug, so both of those and the cam are still in the block

I didn't tear down the pistons because I'm getting the 347 kit and it comes with new pistons

Looks like you have been rather busy! Just out of curiosity, if your on such a tight budget why did you decide to stroke it to 347?

I want a 347 because there's a bunch of people who drop in a 302 and call it quits. I want more, plus I want more power. It's not going in for a while, I have to save up and buy stuff piece by piece. I'll probably end up putting around 5 grand into the engine, and I still have to make up my list. Unless I get promoted it won't be done before the new year.

Not to mention getting a custom drive shaft, and exhaust, and finding a radiator that'll fit(with an electric fan), and engine/tranny mounts, and getting the c6 rebuilt etc... etc... etc...

That works. If your looking for more power check out On3Performances turbo kit. Alot of guys on the mustang boards are running them. Cheap kit with pretty good parts that will make boat loads of power.

I'm not sure I want to run a turbo, atleast not yet... and that site looks like its all '86+ stangs, I'm running on carb, but If I do go forced induction I'll probably go and get a kb supercharger or a blower

What is magnaflux, and were are you getting the kit for your engine. Are you running 4x4 or are you going to turn your ranger in to a strip truck. Looks good so far. I just got the top end of mine tore apart.

magnaflux is checking the for microscopic cracks in the block, theres 2 ways to magnaflux an engine, one is to powdercoat the engine and put it under UV light to check for cracks, another is to use a special magnetic powder and a high powered magnet and the powder will line up straight inside of a crack showing where the crack is

its 2wd so it's gonna be a street truck, all of the parts are coming from summit or edelbrock, or various car parts sites like cjponyparts.com
