help! box construction
I need to know what you guys use to glue MDF board together when building a sub box? do you use any screws? I need help soon because I will be continuing the project tomorrow after school.
thanks
thanks
i use brads and glue to initally build a box then predrill, countersink, and then use screws to secure everything. It is important that if you going to use screws you need to predrill each hole to not split the MDF.
If you're putting something big and powerfull in the box I'd make sure you put L-brackets and screws along with glue and silicon. I destroyed my box for my 15" SPL by turning it up too loud and BOOM!!!! The box blew apart because it didn't have enough holding it together (it was the first box I had built).
And like stated above, ALWAYS predrill or you'll be splitting MDF left and right.

i also used elmers carpentary glue in between the boards. spread the glue with you finger to cover almost all the surface thats being held together. Then I caulked the inside of the box along the edges to seal any missed areas.

i use Liquid Nail for the butt joints, the i pre-drill and use a course thread screw to secure the MDF together......then after it all drys, i run a nice clean bead of silicone inside the box around all the cracks so it doesn't leak...
Screws are only used as a type of clamp, the glue is stronger than the screws and wood itself. Titebond III works well. Predrill and countersink the screws so they dont split the wood. THE SCREWS DO NOT HOLD THE BOX TOGETHER!!! If glued well the wood will break before the glue bond does.
edit: use drywall scews not wood screws

i can't wait to see the finished product.
i don't mean to highjack ur thread, but...will caulk work the same as silicon? i'll be building a box pretty soon too. and i already have the caulk. it should work right?
thanx
