Question (speaker brand preference)
It all depends...
What kind of music do you listen too?
What kind of speakers are you looking at (Comps or coaxials?)
What is your budget?
On an overall level it's tough to just say x is better than y. But given Alpine and Kenwood as my only two choices I'll take Alpine pretty much every time.

Speaker wise, i'm going to have to say neither. For a few bucks more or even the same price, you can get some real decent ones. I don't know if you're shopping somewhere where these are the only brands available. Out of the 2 i'd take alpine though.
It depends on what you want to do...if I didn't have a sub and wanted a little bass, then I'd go for the Alpine...if I just wanted a nice system with little bass then I'd get the Kenwoods...if those were my only choice...I personally would choose some Infinity Reference/Kappa Components or even coaxials over the others...this is all assuming these are amped, of course...if you're not going to amp them I would just get some Pioneers or something of that nature...
Seriously, it all depends on your budget and what sounds best to you.
There have been some great brands listed here. If I were to make a blanket statement to who my favorite brand is, at the moment it would have to be Focal.
Some other brands that i have listened to and liked:
DLS
Dyneaudio
Boston Acoustics
Diamond
Arc Audio
Infinity (I put infinity reference speakers in my "budget" system for my truck)
Brands that make high quality speakers but just didn't do it for me but may do it for you:
JL Audio (However I love their subs and amps (I have 4 JL 8" W3v2 subs in my car))
MB Quart
Morel
CDT
Alpine
I have heard good things about the top of the line Kicker components but I have never heard them in person so I can't make a statement about those.
The most important thing is to set a budget and find something that you like inside that budget. Decide what is important, are you going to amp the speakers with an amp, add a sub, etc...
If you are just going to run the speakers off of deck power, stay away from components and get some coaxials that match the RMS power of your deck.
