Sound upgrade

Well I have around $150 to dump into whatever so I want to do some sound upgrading. I already have some cheapo pyle 5x7s all around which are a lot better than stock but still sound bad. I think the main problem is the stock head unit as it heavly distorts at louder volumes and isn't very clear. So I think thats what I will be upgrading. The requirements are input for a mp3 player, cd input, clear sound and I would like to keep it under $150 with all the parts to put it in. Although if there is some super awesome deal I can't pass up for a bit over then I'll do that.

Uh my sound system was 1300.. For 150 you can get like an okay head unit..

My speakers were like 280 a set and my sub was like 250 and my amp was like 300 and up from there..

I'm not looking to go beat all the people at school with my sound system. Just have some decent speakers and a head unit.

I did an entire system in my bro's car for 150, it was a new sony head unit, not a great model buy cd with mp3 jack on the front, with 2 6.5" speakers and 2 6x9" speakers and to finish it off a ten inch sub and amp. Bought all of it from walmart for christmas last year. I wouldn't put it in my own truck, not quite good enough for me, but its a nice little system for my brother, and its better than stock.

Well go to a local shop and see what they offer.. or i have found online you will save like 50 - 100% on pricing from a store if you wanna install yourself.. I run a JVC head unit with an AUX input i have a pic if you wanna see it.. Its nothing to high end cause well head units dont do much and i only use it to run my ipod in. As for speakers there are alot of low price speakers that are still good. My head unit was around 100 dollars. I would guess you could get decent 6x8 or whatever fits for around 100 dollars too.

so let me know what you want and i can help you from there.

There is a place in town I want to check out as soon as I get cash. If its the same price as crutchfield then I'll buy there, if not, to the internet I go. I stopped by there once and the owner was the only one working so I might be able to pull the "lower the price or lose my business" deal.

Then pepboys has some Pioneer 6x9s for $50. I'll do the 6x9 conversion so I can get a bit more bass.

Seth walmart always has good deals on cd players. I can install it if you don't know how to. it's really easy. you can get a pioneer that's good for 128 at wallie world with harness and all about 150. make those 5x7 sound much better.

Well most of what you price online in a Stereo shop you pay killer overhead.

I believe my dad does in his Saturn. It sticks really far out though.

Yes I know if I were to buy at best buy or whatever the prices are crazy and I know not to go to sound advice as the one time I went there the guy that looked 23 was telling me about his 15 years of experience and how I am wrong and all I have to do is buy their cheapest amp, a $300 jl audio soemthing or other.

Ok, will do. I think I should be ok though. The one quick question I have as well is can I splice and solder the wire harness that the head unit comes with to the stock wires or do I HAVE to get the connecter thing.

you don't have to get the connector thing but PLEASE do. I speak from experience i've installed a couple of radios and it is much easier with the connector, less problems down the road and an easier installation. Either you get to solder in the convenience of your home on a nice table, or crammed into the little stereo compartment inside your truck. Plus if you like your head unit and want to keep it when you sell the truck soldiering wouldn't be very good for you then.

Went to pepboys and got the Kenwood. Installed it in about 2 hours after I got the right mounting hardware. Anyways I probably could have saved a few bucks on the net but I'm happy as is till I start running low on money (then I'll kick myself for not waiting a few days and saving some money). Anyways it sounds awesome, way better than stock.

Another update. Today I went around looking for a cord to plug in my mp3 player (which I never found for cheap, so I still don't have one). But when I was at Circuit City I was looking at their wall display of speakers and as I was leaving I saw some Pioneers so I looked at the price and it was "open box $22." So they are now living in the doors of my truck. I just can't pass up a deal like that.
