Speakers shutting off

My buddy has a 95 ranger with a ok sound system and everytime he blasts his music the speakers turn off and only his subs work. This happens whether he just started his truck or has been running for awhile so i ruled out his amps. Any idea as to what it could be?

BTW: Yes his speakers are hooked up to an amp. And he has a separate one for his subs. He is buying mine tomorrow and if i can figure this out he won't be coming back to me for problems... Any help is appreciated.

check connections at the speakers. just check all connections, then start checking the speakers themselves.

figured out the problem it was just a really old amp that would work then not work so he is just going to wire them up to his head unit instead.
