This is my parent's '98 Lincoln Continental w/ approx 110k miles. Car has the AM/FM/Cassette radio.


Radio is unresponsive. The radio stays on 106.7 at a fairly loud volume. Buttons are unresponsive, volume dial is unresponsive, on/off button is unresponsive as well. You take the fuse out, it kills the radio. But as soon as the fuse is put back in place, radio plays and still stays on 106.7 at the same volume.

I think it's an internal radio issue. Such as a bad power connector of sorts. Any fixes? Anybody have this happen to their radio before?? Whats the cure?



If there isn't a cure for it, I plan on finding out what factory ford radios mount in a '98 Continental....hopefully one of those nifty aux input/cd/mp3 players like on Marie's '08. At least a CD player, that I know.

Unfortunately, the 'rents dont want to put an aftermarket unit in it. I know that's the easiest option.

sounds like it may be something terminal, i would try and find a later unit to put back in there

 

Shane, ya know... bring it out here and have it stuck on 106.7 pretty loud... it tends to be a good thing... 106.7 KBPI here is hard rock

 

When the stock radio goes bad, i don't think there is much you can do for it.

None of the factory radios have an auxiliary built into the face, its external. I searched for a factory unit with auxiliary input, and couldn't find one older than 08 (they may have started in 06 in the nicer vehicles), i ended up going aftermarket. You can for sure get a newer factory radio and auxiliary jack and hide the jack somewhere.

Yeah, just replace it with a later model mp3 cd player, and call it a day.

Back to the thread. lol. Yeah...On starts the hunt to see exactly how the radio mounts to the dash to determine what other vehicles I can rob a radio from.

Are there steering wheel or stem-mounted controls for that radio? If so, there's a possibility that there's an issue with that sub-system, and it's causing the radio to "lock up". Ford likes to use a resistor network (sorta like the blower motor speed selector) for those sorts of controls, but if one resistor opens up or shorts out, the entire thing stops working...

 

nope. just the cruise controls in the wheels. all radio controls are on the radio.

 

hmm. in that case, it sounds like the wiring going to the front panel, internally in the radio, has broken, come loose, or whatever. time to remove it from the dash and do some exploratory surgery on it.

 

Also, the only radios i found that were compatable with the auxiliary have the AUX button, which i THINK (not sure) are only the newer 6 discs.

 

I know this one thats in the car has the CD changer controls.... would that be considered an Aux input? Like say I went and found a AM/FM/CD/Changer control, use the changer input for the ipod 3.5mm female jack, and mount it some where?? hmmmmm.....



I'm still pushin' them to get an aftermarket. Like an Alpine or Panasonic(which i've had awesome luck with in my vehicles).

 

nah. my 07 has a single cd/mp3 and it has the aux button and port from the factory. the only thing is the aux isnt mounted on the head unit. its where the airbag off switch was on the older trucks.

 

I know there are kits you can buy that will allow you too hook up an Audio Input in place of the cd changer. Give me a min and I'll see if I can find what I am talking about.

The thing that kept me from doing that to my factory radio was the loss of a Cd player. If you don't mind losing the Cd player, this would be the way to go. Depending on how much how much you could pick up another factory radio for, i'm sure this would be quite a bit cheaper than a new aftermarket setup.



Thats how my grandmas 08 is, wasn't sure when they started it.

 

You can still use the CD player. This just make the radio think that the aux input is a CD changer.

Won't one of our old factory CD player's pop into the Lincoln? i thought they were all the same...

 

the way it mounts is different...BUT...I think I can just swap 'frames'....say take the lincoln frame and mount it to one of the ranger radios... like your radio since mine is fubared. lol.

just told him the problem is terminal. told him about the option of putting in a stock am/fm/cd/aux changer control converted to accept an ipod aux. unbelieveably, he wants to just get an aftermarket unit! can't believe it. lol.

talk to him. that cord on the stereo in the shop is exactly what he'll need....RCA to speaker jack cord. Actually..I ran that in the truck before I had that awesome ipod cable. Quality sucked for my kickass stereo in the truck. And we both know what dad has is NOT an ipod...it's a no-name mp3 player. lol.
