Where's this noise coming from?

1999 Ranger with OEM stereo. Just started hearing a ticking noise through the radio. When you change the RPM's, the static or whatever it is, changes also. It's as if it fades in and out, louder and more pronounced at some times, and hardly noticable at others.BTW, when I put in a CD, it plays perfect with no static or ticking at all. Thanks

ah yeah my 2000 stock ranger does this type of thing as well I noticed. However its on the freeway only and I mostly notice it when I'm using my FM transmitter in the truck. I have noticed that it seems like the faster I drive the more clicking i get. ex: at 50mph its barely noticeable then at 70mph its almost constant. I think it has to do with the wind force on the FM metal radio antenna(located near the hood) the faster you go as well as possible leakage through the lead wire from that through the engine compartment into the back of the stereo which could explain some engine noise as well. If you look out the window you can see radio antenna bouncing slightly in the wind.
