I know there are threads on this some where but I figured it would be easier to make my own. what are some good, safe ways to clean my engine without ruining it? and how do I go by doing it

 

Spray on some Simple Green, close the hood let the engine run then spray it off.

 

Long as you dont have an open filter type intake you should be fine...I just try not to spray a direct stream on anything
Honestly though just spraying it off is only gonna get off the top layer lol...I just did mine last week and I wasnt too happy with the result...so I went at it by hand and just cleaned and cleaned and it turned out alright

 

I use Simple Green or Super Clean mixed with water and put in a 2 gallon fertilizer sprayer.Pump it up and the wand lets you get in the tight spots.Let it sit for half an hour then hit it with the pressure washer.

 

Simple Green is the best dont use any of those in the can aerosols that they sell to clean your motor they just mess stuff up.

 

Blue Wolf will clean anything, if you can find it.

 

I use Simple Green also. Have also gotten good results with Super Clean if you can't find Simple Green in your area.
Just follow the directions on the bottle. I mix my Simple Green about 5 or 6 to 1.
If your engine is really dirty, you might want to go a bit stronger. Like 3 to 1.
I use an old windex 32 oz spray bottle, add 5 or 6 oz of simple green, then fill the bottle with water and go to work.
I also like to follow the directions given on this video. Been doing it this way for a few years now and no problems to date.

Its not going to get clean without scrubbing. Get a long medium brissle brush and get to work.

 

Run your truck until the engine gets to normal operating temperature. Use a light staedy stream of simple green cleaning solution and spray it down completely. Let it sit for about 15 to 20 minutes, then use a pressure washer to rinse it off. That should get it decent looking for you. As far as aresol cans of engine cleaner, black magic is the only one I recomend. I'ts the only one that really works in my opinion. The others are considered cash in the trash because they don't work. Black magic is the only one that even attempts to.

 

Hmmm.. I personally like to use either Simple Green, or some of the Orange topped engine foaming cleaner.. worked WONDERS on cleaning out my old '88 rangers transmission and engine area/bay... it was as simple as getting everythign all warmed up, spraying on the foam, and let it do it smagic.. wait about 5 minutes, rinse it all off, heat the engine back up again, and rinse and repeat as many times you like till tis all looking stock out of the factory again :-)


To do my entinre engine and bay, along with the underside of the transmission, took roughly 1 can with heavy spraying all over.. I woudl recommend 2 or 3 cans of it to do a really really good job.. will probably do it myself here this next week.

 

Should a you cover the distributor or other electronic areas first -- before spraying?

 

Get a hot water pressure washer! I'm gonna use my buddys out at his shop next time I go back home lol

 

I agree with using a pressure washer. It works wonders on grime that's been there for years. At least it did on mine.

You do realize just how expensive a hot water pressure cleaner is right? upwards of an easy thousand bucks in a heartbeat, lol

I,ve got a friend who has one.

 

I just looked in 2 places for a Hot water pressure washer. Lowes and Home Depot. Try about $2,200 for a small decent one. The steam genie is really good at cleaning the engine if used correctly.

 

cchsbuzz, I can do it for you for like 10 bucks, if that. all i need is a garden hose with a spray nozzle. I detail cars all day long, so of course i have a bit of chemicals for "personal" use. I live in brunswick and work in streetsburo, just shoot me a message. I can do it saturday after 5-6ish, hell if you want to come up to my work after 3 tomorrow[sat.] i'll do it there.

 

What do you guys use on engines if you don't mind me asking? In 1992 I had a detailing business for Schwan's Foods in Ocala, FLA. I had an employee that kept stealing from me and eventually I ended up going under because of it.

 

Chemicals i get a little bit from auto magic, mostly all Steven's Car Care. I use Steven's "tire and whitewall cleaner" which is just degreaser, diluted 6:1, and i don't scrub much, even on wheels, all i do is follow up with wire wheel acid for those and perfect.

I use spray degreaser on and use a brush, then wash it off with a pressure washer, if you can get a pressure washer that can make the water hot, if not it will still do the job.

 

I cleaned my engine today, followed the video tutorial that someone posted earlier. Everything went well and it looks really clean now.

I dodn't have time to go to my local store to buy simple green so i just used my household all purpose cleaner called (pine sol) worked great.
