Working on my kids truck:
2003 Manual 2 wheel drive ranger with the 2.3 duratec
Symptoms: Really rough idle maybe misfire, dies a lot but drives normal after 2k rpm
I have ruled out (I think)
Idle Control Valve (new no change)
Pcv Valve (new no change)
Plug Wires
Coil Pack (All sparking)
I have unplugged one plug at a time and still seems to run the same so I don't think its a cylinder issue
Unplugged the Map Sensor with no change
Unplugged the MAF sensor and it smooths out but bounces non stop from 800-2k rpms (not sure if that is a bad MAF or not)
Cleaned the MAF with same results
I think I figured it out... I got it to throw a p2004 code and the Intake Manifold Control Valve had one of the vacuum ports broken off and the other line was cracked.
That should explain all the symptoms, Guess Ill know wed.. No one had it locally and it was half the cost on Amazon.
Although I think that valve wasn't helping anything, I have figured out what the issue is after watching a few more videos I found a case where a little plastic plug on the front of the intake manifold had popped out (ironically at the end of the runner) and after shining a light down there I could visibly see the plug itself so I know its the problem.. Guess I am tearing off the top later today
On a good note, I put in a 1/4 pipe threaded plug into the hole and you can manage it without taking off the whole top. Then JB welded a Nut behind it so there is no way for it to back out. You need to pull the power steering pump out of the way and just loosen up the 5 bolts holding the intake on, that will allow it to move out just enough to thread in the new plug.
