2008 2.3/auto, strange "doink" and misfire

Hello and thanks for your help. This is my first post. I have owned a few rangers over the years and just got a 2008 regular cab, 2.3 with an auto trans. 70,000 miles. I have a problem I just can't figure out.

The problem is what feels like a periodic misfire that corresponds with what can only be described as a faint metallic "doink" sound that can only be heard inside the cab (sounds like it's coming from the passenger kick panel). There is no CEL. The truck runs fine otherwise.

The problem only happens while in motion, and only seems to happen while the AC is on, although the doink does not seem to be the AC clutch cycling, I can hear that separately from the doink...I think. You can sit at a stoplight with the AC on and not hear the sound.

It seems to be happening more frequently, and the misfire seems to be getting more pronounced, so I would like to find the cause and correct it.

Thanks for putting up with this crazy topic, I appreciate any ideas you may have on the cause.

I'm gonna have to say this is a tough one. Perhaps trying to video the sound and putting it up on youtube may help.

As for the misfire have you replaced the spark plugs and wires yet? Also, the 2.3L duratec coils are well known for cracking and causing problems so that's another area to test.

thanks for the reply. I was not able to find the source of the problem. I actually wound up selling the truck and buying another one.
