I have a 04 with the 2.3 and was just wondering what were a few was to add some power? Such as exhaust ( what kind? ) or Intake ( again what kind? ) Or any other mods that aren't ridiculously expensive?

 

Exhaust nor an intake will be really noticable.

If you really wanted power the 4.0 engine option is about the best bet. The 4 bangers are peppy. Only thing would be a tuner (if they have them for 2.3 duratechs) A lower gear ratio will make your truck rev higher at the same engine speed so to say. Other then that on a factory tune nothing really helps much.

Im really not looking to get 25+ Horse Power, Im just looking for a little more ommph sp? when I get on it and to make the truck a bit quicker

 

Start with the air box mod. Search and you will find it. That with a K&N or other high flow filter will give you almost all the benefits of a K&N FIPK intake, without some of the drawbacks. Next, lose the 1 3/4" pipe behind the cat. Replace it with 2 1/2 to match the diameter of the pipe off the back of the cat, and a GOOD high flow muffler, no cheap auto zone muffler. After that, get the XCal tuner from BamaChips. And done. All together with a 93 octane tune, you should see 15 or so HP gain.
Except for the tuner, this is all pretty cheap.
K&N Drop in filter=$50
Airbox mod=free
Cat back exhaust=had mine done at a muffler shop for $80, plus muffler.
Tuner=$400
And don't listen to the guys who say the 2.3 DOHC is slow. A stock reg cab 5-speed truck will beat a v-6 Stang or a 3.0 V-6 Ranger.
Ask me how I know.

 

wow if you think your ranger is slow, you should drive my 2.3 Lima around for a week, sh*t a day!! then you will be happy that you have the DOHC motor. more power and better gas milege then mine.

 

I recently heard about heartthrobexhaust.com and seems like they have catbacks for the 4cyl - some exhaust sites I've checked don't show exhaust options for the 4cyl Ranger.

I'm with him... My buddy has a 07 and when i drive his truck i feel like i'm flying.

 

I have the Flowmaster 2 1\2" from the cat and a K&N FIPK, and it moves pretty good, and does pretty good off-road

 

just carb it screw efi.

1: Give your truck a tune up. If things aren't optimal, you won't get factory performance. (Good)

2: If you want to make a big difference, get some headwork done, and your basic boltons. - Don't forget to retune. (better)

3: Building a turbo engine will be expensive, but the best option. You could get a different truck for less cost. (best)

 

i have just a cat with 2.5" out in front of the left rear tire and the kn with the air box mod and i couldnt tell a difference in power.try to keep the ranger as light as possible keep it between empty and a quarter tank for less weight.

 

Keeping any car/truck between empty and a 1/4 tank although will be lighter you will burn fuel pumps faster.

This is an awesome article on headwork for your truck. The intake and exhaust are not your constraining parts, so working on this would make more sense then changing something that is already adequate for your complete powertrain setup.

 

Plus when you're getting chased by the cops you can't go as far.
