Help with belt pulley?

Sorry guys, I'm new to vehicles and am trying to learn this stuff and I know I'm gonna sound like an idiot but better late then never right? Anyway I was doing some sensor cleaning and when the truck was at idle, I noticed the triangular section on on this unit here would turn on and spin every 20 seconds for a couple seconds and then turn off. I think this is the A/C compressor but the A/C wasn't on. Any help?

When it starts to spin, the MAP reading goes up from 25 kPa to 30 and the RPM goes from 850 to 1000.
Coolant is steaming too when I open the top after it's cooled off a bit. The ECT is 100 degrees C which is pretty hot for a -5 day too.

Did you have the defroster on?

Negatory, doesn't even have one. Just the one that comes out the dash

The A.C. compressors are only truly "off" when the fan selector switch is in the "off" position. It doesn't need to be on A.C. or Max A.C. to run. It will come on automatically in either defrost mode (dash only or dash and floor) and when in regular vent modes. It's used to dry the air inside the cab not just cool the air. I would double check that the switch is in the OFF position and check it again. If it's still engaging at that point I believe it could be the clutch switch but im not an A.C. expert. I just know these particular year rangers have the annoying feature of the A.C. compressor not having a distinct off mode when you just want to turn the fan or heat on.

OK and am I right in that the spinning triangular piece is separate completely from the timing belt there?

That's not your timing belt, that's your serpentine belt. But technically yes, that is the clutch that engages the A.C. compressor. The pulley always spins obviously but the internals of the compressor only spin when the clutch engages.

Ok thanks! I probably had the defroster on then by accident. Why does it engage for window defroster though?

Because the A.C. system also acts as a dehumidifier. When you have the defroster on the A.C. stays on to dry the air and get rid of fog and moisture alot faster.
