Possible to beat a Tiburon with my 2.3L?

My friend has a 99 Tiburon and likes to think it is fast..

Stock specs via edmunds:

99 Tiburon:
Acceleration (0-60 mph): 7.9 sec.
Braking Distance (60-0 mph): 148 ft.
Road Holding Index: .81 g
Base Number of Cylinders: 4
Base Engine Size: 2 liters
Base Engine Type: Inline 4
Horsepower: 140 hp @ 6000 rpm
Torque: 133 ft-lbs. @ 4800 rpm
Drive Type: FWD

02 Ranger:
Base Number of Cylinders: 4
Base Engine Size: 2.3 liters
Base Engine Type: Inline 4
Horsepower: 135 hp @ 5050 rpm
Torque: 153 ft-lbs. @ 3750 rpm
Drive Type: RWD

The curb weight difference is around 600lbs, though his car is pure stock, cheap tires, and a bit under maintained..

My truck will soon be lowered 2/2 with Weld Prostars and most likely some all season tires.. I already have a rear sway bar, K&N 77 Series intake, Magnaflow catback, 4.10 diff, and will get the sct tuner retuned..

Both automatics, my 5 speed vs his 4 speed..

I know I might be over analyzing this but I think my truck should win after a few mods, but that is on take off..

any ideas or imput?

know it's sad

I think you've got him off the line, then the 4.10s will take it's toll at about 100.

my truck has not seen anything near that speed since it was stock.. fastest I got up to was 95ish before the governor kicked in.. In its current setup the fastest I go is 85.. then I prepare for take off

Take it to the drag strip and see.
OR.
Find a local Auto-Cross and both you attend. (This is a time trial around cones in a parking lot). This is a more 50/50 split of driver and vehicle capability.

It is as much driver as it is car when racing.

I’ve always watched autocross but never thought of trying it, might be time to check it out, thanks!

I dont think the 7.9sec 0-60 is for an automatic 4cyl tiburon.. that is probably for the V6, which still is only like 170hp or something like that. I think it might be interesting.

it would be a good race to see. i had a '96 ranger with a 2.3L w/5 speen man. and i used to beat neons and civics all the time. hahaha...... and yes i know, its not much of an accomplishment but still. my truck was sloooooowwww and still had a little bit of pep.

if i were you i would make it a short race. first to hit 60mph like u said. he will beat u in the long run no doubt.

The tiburon might have the weight advantage, but torque is what gets you off the line. Though my truck is a truck and not a sport coupe

I beat my wifes '03 Accent GT 1.6DOHC, my brother-in-laws Golf 2.0 and I also beat my brothers '03 Passat Turbo. If you had a stick, you wold embarass the S*** outa him, with the auto you'll still prolly win, just not a bad.
Still do it and find out. let us know.
BTW, in autocross he would take you in the turns BAAAAAD! Lower it before you try that!
