Transfer case chain loose

Should change the whole transfer case or just swap out the chain?...1354 Electric. Are the chains easy to swap and would I be in for unexpected other components needed?
Thanks John

I would just swap it out; electric cases are easy to find.

When you put the truck in low range it jumps a tooth making a big jolt to the truck. If you pull the fill plug out you can stick a screwdriver in there and feel the slack in the chain.

Okay, I wondered how you could tell. There's no guarantee it's only a chain. If you ever switched to low range while moving at all it can do all sorts of stuff though it's hard to do that in the truck I believe.

The chains on later model transfer cases are narrower than the old 1354's though. 1" wide vs. 1.5" wide on the old ones as I understand it. Haven't been in there to verify that though.

transfercases are pretty cheap. I got mine for $200. Thats with 40,000 miles and the motor and everything to put it in.

I just saw your "WTB" in the classified section. Good luck -- should be someone around putting a manual in or something who'll see the electric cheaply.

The hardest part is finding the case and shift linkage. They're pretty rare parts. Other than that its not hard at all.

the front output on the transfer case is different, unless you are able to find one off a lvl2.

the cure for this would be to get an explorer driveshaft, i forgot the exact year my dad used on his.

Yes, the older ones have yokes instead of the cups later models have. Finding a manual that your current driveshaft will just bolt to will be difficult.

It's easier for older trucks and SAS'd trucks since we need u-joint style yokes anyway.

can you take an older case and install the newer style front output shaft for the front driveshaft?

It is fairly easy. Just make sure your transmission tail housing has the holes for the shift linkage on the driver side. Other than that, it is a matter of dropping one t-case and installing the other. Then cutting a hole in the floor plate for the shifter and bolting the shifter up.

I just got one

Yes the whole front of the t-case is different from an auto to a manual shifter. The electric doesn't have the spot for the shifter arm to exit on the front.

The rear is also different as the rear doesn't have the spot for the shift motor to bolt to. The flat spot is there, but there is no screw holes or a hole for the shifter arm to come through.

Yes you can take the case apart and change them. It would eliminate the CV style output on the newer cases if you got an older case. You can run an Explorer front drive shaft from any '92-'94 (the '95+ Explorers have the same style driveshaft as the '98+ Rangers).

Pssshhh BS. I don't believe a word of it. haha.

BTW here is another 1354m on ebay. No linkage on this one though, and it appears the lever on the case itself is missing......

Also a 1350 linkage, kinda 'spensive since it would have to be modded to work with the 1354.

Also a **** lol

That transfer case actually looks like an electric case; see all the wiring on the back of it?
