03 2wd rear end

sup guys, so i looked around on here for a bit and couldnt find anything too specific, or that didnt lose me (im new to gearing and the like, so excuse it if i screw up some terms) and was wondering how to go about swapping the rear end to a posi? i know i have an open diff right now and was wondering if i'd have to buy a whole new set of gears or can go to a local scrapyard and try to find one layin around. are there any distictive features to pick one out right away? and the explorer axle thing i keep seeing, is that just an easier way to get this done, or is that something else completley. thanks again from a noob lol

The easiest way is to find an axle which is already set up with limited slip. Go to junkyards and look for axles with the specs you are looking for. If you look at the rear diff cover there is a tag stamped on a little piece of metal (like a dog tag) which has the gear code on it ex 4.10 gears with a posi set up would be labeled 4L10.

I'll be corrected if I am wrong but you can check the L/S by spinning one side of the axle and then stopping that side. If the other side keeps spinning the axle has L/S.
