03 ranger fx4
Sounds like your transfer case might not be engaging 4wd. 01+ have live axles, which means no hubs. The front wheels are always locked to the axle. If you are sure the transfer case is engaged into 4wd then your front differential could be blown. Do you have the electric or manual transfer case? Does your 4wd light come on and on solid not flashing? If you have the electric transfer case they are known to have shift motor problems. You could also be hearing the 4x4 module relays which control the shift motor and not the actual transfer case locking.
