Icon5 1996 4r55e compatability question...please!!!

I have a 96' ranger 4x4 , 4.0, 4r55e auto tranny and the tranny went out and i am looking for a replacement and I have found a couple places on the web that say an aerostar with the 4.0 used the exact same 4r55e in 96 and then i talked to a guy that has one i am looking at and he said it will not work..... ford says its different but cant tell me any differences between the 2... from the information I have gathered through the forums and various websites I can use the aerostar tranny I just have to use my current transfer case please give me any answers you may have I am going nuts!!!!

If the price is right and willing to gamble some time on it I say do it.

The electronics are the same you will need to swap over any hardware mounted to that came from your original trans. 96 is the only year to get the 4r as 97 they went 5r so double check the year.

I am not 100% on the compatibility but I would try it.

he wants 425 and he warranties it....not really sure what the warranty includes yet however it is still 325 cheaper than any yard transmission i could find and within 20 mins to pick it up rather than the 3 hours for the more exspensive one.... I think i will try it if the electronics are the same it should work ...."in theory" but my daily driver has been sitting for 2 weeks now and im about to pull my hair out lol....

Pick it up wait 2 days and till him it does not have reverse.

:P

As long as the aerostar is the AWD version then you will have no issues with bolting it in.

The only thing I can think of is the aerostar may have a different wiring connectors, but I doubt it. Shift strategy is done by the truck computer and the electronics in the trans are the same from 95-97.
