1997 Trans Help!

My 97 Ranger is making a new noise! Every time I put it into gear it makes a pretty bad mechanical grinding sound, clearly the transmission? In park or neutral it does not happen, but in drive and reverse this noise occurs from about 5mph to idle. Noise goes away once it gets going through first gear. It sounds worse at idle. Almost as if something extra is spinning or grinding when it should not be. I heard this while driving, got worried and checked the ATF. It was a little low so I added some, but, that clearly was not the solution. As stated, in park the noise goes away but right when I turn the truck off I hear the noise for a brief moment and it sounds like it revs down as the engine does then stops. It's just my assumption that it is the transmission, if ANYone has ANY ideas please help me! I need to do something. But, being an idiot, I've got no clue what to do. So before I spend money I look to you, fellow Ford enthusiasts, for your insight.
