2002 FX4 rear end

I was under the immpresion that i blew the rear on my ranger i heard a loud bang and would go knoware. but if that was true wouldn't i still be able to put it in 4wd witch i can't. did i do more damage than the rear? when i put it in gear the spedo moves and i was told the trans was fine. just a little odd that the front wheels wouldn't activate with the transfer case.

If you lift the rear end off the ground can you spin it?

x2 on spinning the tires

If they dont move, or move by hand but there is noise, then i would pop the diff cover off and check to make sure the torsion is good. also, look at the diff cover for damage, as well as the t-case.
