2005 ran edge 2wd rotor/bearing issue

I have changed rotors and bearings in the past but had major issues on 1 side and ordered parts to put on brakes, rotors and new bearings. Today I started on the passenger side removing the old parts and prepared my new rotors for install. I packed the inner bearings and put the ring on and tapped as I have done before. I then went to put them onto the spindle/axle and they won't fit over part that starts to widen. I took the other bearing I had for the other side just to see if it would slide on and it wouldn't either. I have no idea what the issue is. I again confirmed it was the right set of bearings. I even took the old ones and they slid right on. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated because I really need this fixed asap for work. Also I did not even start on the other side to see if they would work on that side. Thanks for any help
