2007 ranger 4x4 rear end whine

Hi, I'm new to the forum and hopefully someone can help me out. I hav a 2007 ford ranger fx4 with 180,000 highway miles I recently noticed a faint whine coming from the back of the cab while driving. I have to roll the windows up and radio off to hear it but its driving me crazy knowing its there. It doesn't do it upon acceleration just when cruising and deceleration, some people told me I simply need a diff. Fluid change and some people say I need a new rear end. So any help is much appreciated... Thanks
