Icon3 2008 Ranger Sticks in 4H

This is 2008 XLT 4.0 automatic. If I shift to 4h for off road operation, it doesn't shift back to 2h. 4h light on dash stays on with switch in 2h position. Eventually goes off. Drove 35 miles last time before it went off. Tried backing up, going to neutral, etc. Also doesn't go to 4l. 4h light stays on. After reading some of the posts here, I'm not sure it's the transfer case motor since it does go from 2h to 4h but it could be. Suggestions?

To get into 4lo, you have to be in neutral and moving less than 3mph, same to get out of 4lo

Thanks for this. Pretty sure I was in N but will try again when I resolve the primary issue - doesn’t go from 4h back to 2h
