2011 2.3 4x2 trans swap question
2011 2.3 4x2 trans swap question
I have a 2011 2.34 x 2 ford ranger and I do a lot of highway driving so I’m looking to get my rpm’s down little bit while at interstate speed. While I’m cruising down the interstate at 70 mph my RPMs are all the way up at 3000 and I’m sure that’s what’s killing my gas mileage so my question is I heard that there is a five speed transmission with a overdrive and I don’t believe that’s the Transmission I have in mine is it? My tree has 123D. Also has anyone else had issues with their transmission shifting a little rough?
You have the 5R44E transmission. It is technically a 3 speed transmission but uses an overdrive twice to make it a 5 speed. (3rd gear is technically 2nd gear with the overdrive engaged and 5th is 4th gear with the overdrive engaged) there is/was no other automatic transmission available for your truck.
The 2.3 makes its best power at high RPMs so 3k is not really a bad cruising range. What exactly is you gas mileage? And the 5R44E is generally a pretty smooth transmission. Whats your fluid look like? How many miles are on it and when was it last serviced?

It was serviced at about 70 to 80,000 miles and now I has 96,000 miles on it. Fluid looks clean.I’m getting about 320 to a tank on the interstate. When I first got it I was getting more like 350 or closer to 400
As far as the transmission shifting goes the other day I had to floret to get around somebody and it shifted Down just fine but then when I let off the gas as it was shifting down at felt more like it dropped into each year rather than a smooth transition

Look on the drivers door back edge, you will see a label
It will have the stock tire size, speedometer and odometer will not be correct if tires are not stock size
Larger diameter tires show slower speed and less miles traveled than actual speed or miles traveled
Go here to get diameter of YOUR current tires in inches: https://tiresize.com/calculator/
And the door label will also have rear axle ratio, look under AXLE at the bottom and there will be a 2 digit code number
Look here to see what axle ratio you have: Ford 7.5 & 8.8 Inch Axle Tag & Door Codes : The Ranger Station
4:10 ratio means higher RPM at speed, but more torque when starting off
3:55 ratio means lower RPM at speed, and less torque to get going
3:73 was the popular mid-way ratio.
Once you have that data you can go here: Engine RPM / Engine Speed Calculator
enter
YOUR rear axle ratio
YOUR tire size, in inches
Vehicle speed: 70
Transmission ratio: .75 << this is OverDrive ratio, 5th gear
Then click on calculate
That will tell you what RPM should be at 70mph
Then change to Transmission ratio: 1.00
And calculate again, this is 4th gear, Overdrive OFF
See what RPMs are for that, if this is what you are seeing when driving then Overdrive is not engaging
