4r44e Replacement Need Info/Advice

I have a 2000 Ranger 3.0 A.T. 4x2 with a bad trans. Dealer/parts shop/salvage yards check the part numbers and say that I need 99-00 3.0 4x2 as a donor, but I've seen posts to the contrary in this forum. Can anyone tell me definitively what my options are? Rebuilt/reman is to expensive and I cannot find a fair price for the miles on any "exact matches".

Welcome to the forum

Not sure why there would be any confusion
Automatics use the bell housing back plate as part of the Front(main) pump so while you can change the bell housing to match engine, it does require some rebuilding
So any used transmission you get must be from a 3.0l Vulcan engine, so it will bolt up to your 3.0l Vulcan engine

The tail shaft housing is different for 2WD and 4WD transmissions, and on automatics you need to do a complete rebuild and get a new shaft and housing to change a 4WD trans to 2WD
So you would need a 2WD transmission from a 3.0l Ranger or Mazda B3000

2000 Ranger 3.0l did use the 4R44E 4-speed automatic.
2001, and up, Ranger 3.0l got the 5R44E 5-speed automatic, your 2000 computer can't operate the 5R44E 5-speed

You can use 1995 to 2000 4R44E from a 2WD 3.0l Ranger.

1995 to 1998 were same build, 1999-2000 was new revision, so exactly the same as you have now, which is why 99-00 comes up as replacement
But 1995 to 1998 will work fine as well

1995 was the first year for the 4R44E, after a new transmission has been on the road a few years Ford will look at what warranty work was needed and then make revision changes to address any common problems, which was the 1999 model
Same transmission, just internal changes to make it more reliable
If you rebuilt a 1995 4R44E it would become a 1999 internally because it would get the new revision of parts

The 4.0l engines got the 4R55E and this designation is often used for ALL 4R transmissions, so if you see 4R55E for 3.0l it is actually a 4R44E seller just used generic 55E designation

Main change Ford made with the 4R was they bonded the valve body gasket to the valve body so it wasn't a separate part, there were leakage issues with that gasket, the bonding of it to the valve body reduced that issue.

Just a heads up, ALL automatics, regardless of manufacturer, run on fluid pressure.
Reverse requires the highest pressure to engage, 175psi +, most common issue with automatics is slow engaging Reverse or no Reverse, which means a loss of internal pressure, so leaking gaskets and seals.
This leaking is most often caused by heat, the true enemy of all automatics is hot fluid.
A $60 transmission cooler will add many miles to any automatic
Automatic trans fluid should run between 190-200degF same as engine coolant.
When you drive up a hill or on a warm day the radiator trans cooler is not enough.
And obviously if you carry loads or pull a trailer fluid will heat up faster

I also have seen mention of changes to speed sensor position. Anything I need to look out for on that front?

No

1998 to 2000 Rangers use the rear axle ABS sensor for speed functions, so no connection to transmission
You can use 1995 to 2000 4R44E from a 2WD 3.0l Ranger or 2WD Mazda B3000

If you had a 1995 to 1997 Ranger then you would need speedo hook up on transmission

Is there a spot on the later year transmissions for a speedo hook up (I.E. 98-2000)

No, last year was 1997 BUT...............................the output shaft on 2WD automatics have the speedo Drive gear machined on to the shaft, so its still there on all up to 2000, and I think even later models still had the gear
So you can swap 1997 and earlier tail shaft housing to the later model 2WD automatics, tail shaft housing are the same, 1995-2011
And then you can hook up the VSS and driver gear
