4r55e 2-3 slip

Hey all, normally I’m on the Chevy forums, but, everyone needs a Ford Ranger. Anyway, been trying to figure out this tranny problem. It’s got 200k on it so…I know it’s getting old.
This is on a 96 ranger, 4.0 4WD.
-Tranny acts completely normal except shifting from 2-3. Once it’s in 3rd, it stays there. Holds all the gears fine with no issues other than this 2-3 slip. Letting off the gas for a couple seconds until it shifts, then you’re good to go.

-So the info I’ve found so far says it’s a worn servo bore. Has anyone else had this problem or tried doing the fix online where you add o-rings to the servo?

2~3 Slip is typical in 4r55e\5r55e Tranny as they get over 150kMiles. Make sure ATF level is good after warming up; check in Park idling.
How long since MerconV+Filter has been changed & Bands adjusted; should be done every 33kMiles? I'd first try this.
Tranny ValveBody gasket could be developing a Leak\BlowOut & need replacing.
Recommend suctioning+refreshing ~1qt of MerconV from Tranny DipTube every 6mths, along with routine Engine Oil+Filter changes.
Use quality MerconV: MotorCraft\Valvoline\AmsOil\Lucas...

Transmission fluid was recently changed and the problem didn’t occur before they changed the fluid. Not sure if it’s coincidence or not.

That ATF change may have exposed a leak/blowout in the ValveBody Gasket?
Do you know what brand and type ATF was used?

Not sure. It was done at the Ford dealership, so I would hope the correct fluid was used. Also noticed the fluid is very high on the dipstick, but it’s not leaking out the overflow tube, so I assume it’s fine.
-I’ll figure since I’ll be in there, I’ll change the VB gasket, new filter, transgo shiftkit, and test the solenoids? Is it the EPC solenoid? I’ll just buy a new one.
-Let me know if there’s anything else I should look for while I’m in there. Just use the regular Mercon fluid in these right?
-I’ll post back when I install these things and report if it fixed my problems, or if I located the problem.
-Anything else you know about these trannies that might be relevant would be appreciated.
Thanks for your help

Sounds like you've already studied up on the issues with this Tranny.
Any issue or delay shifting into Reverse?
Consider adjusting the Bands while your under there.
Be sure to properly torq VB bolts.
Yep the modulated EPC solenoid is a common culprit; can try adjusting EPC screw by NO MORE than 1/4 turn to increase ATF pressure by about 10%,
but if the VB Gasket is leaking, this may or may not help; more interesting info & links at

Use MerconV or compatible equivalent; personal preference is AmsOil SSMVSATF.
