4x4 indicator light
4x4 indicator light
I have a 1994 automatic and noticed that the 4low no longer illuminates when pushed, I didn't check to see yet if it goes into 4 wheel drive when switch is pushed because the 4 wheel light does come on. Does anyone have a idea of what to check.
Welcome to the forum
The 4WD buttons are not connected to the 4WD lights, just FYI
So 4WD light should NOT come on the moment the button is pressed, there should be a delay
The 4x4 control module, behind drivers seat, controls the 4WD lights
When you select 4high then 4x4 control module powers up the electric shift motor on the transfer case
Shift motor has a contact wheel inside that shows position of transfer case, 2WD, 4H or 4L
When shift motor has moved to correct position 4x4 control module shuts off power and THEN turns on the 4high light
Same for 4low
Here is what shift motor looks like inside: https://www.explorerforum.com/forums...-motor.123542/
4th picture down shows the shift positions in transfer case
2H(2wd) and 4H are close, 90deg apart so doesn't take long for motor to switch between these positions, so light comes on or goes off fairly fast switch between these 2 positions
4low has to move 270 deg, so takes awhile for motor to shift transfer case into 4low and then 270 deg back to 2H, so longer delay before light comes on
5th and 6th pictures are the contact wheel and its contacts this tells the 4x4 control module the position of transfer case, so if you leave transfer case in 4low and shut off the vehicle, when you start it back up the 4x4 control module knows its in 4low by position of contact wheel
