4x4 not engaging - 2001 ranger/b3000 manual trans

Hi forum,

Vehicle: my 2001 3.0 Mazda B3000 manual trans, electronic 4x4.

Problem: 4x4 will not engage when cabin switch is operated.

4x4 dash lights illuminate upon startup = Yes
hood and cabin fuses good = Yes
relay clicks when turning switch = Yes
dash lights illuminate when turning switch = No
Shift motor turns when turning switch = No
(shift motor is new, and does function when fed 12v)
truck is now useless in snow = Yes
I am now only half a man = Yes

I roughly understand that the signal chain goes:
switch > fuses > module > motor > dash lights.

I would replace 4x4 module but other threads suggest that if module failed, dash lights = no.

What do I not understand correctly such that I cannot infer which part has failed?

Thanks in advance for the help.

Welcome to the forum

You have a bit of misinformation

The 4WD lights come on with key on as a BULB TEST, like most of the dash warning lights, nothing to do with the 4WD system itself, test is done so driver can see if a bulb is burned out

The switch and shift motor are connected to the 4x4 module
When you select 4WD on the switch the module powers the motor to move transfer case into position, there are 5 contacts inside the motor that open and close as the motor turns, this is how the 4x4 module can tell what position transfer case is in
When the contacts are correct for 4WD then 4x4 module stops send power to motor and it THEN turns on the 4WD light

IF............you select 4WD and the 4x4 module powers the motor and the contacts do not change, the 4x4 module stops sending power and will start to Flash Both 4WD lights rapidly
If this happens then shift motor is most likely bad, or its fuse is blown
Since this does not happen I would suspect 4x4 module fuse is blown, or the 4x4 module itself is bad

2001-2005 4x4 modules did fail, so not uncommon to have to replace them
2001 - 2005 Ranger or Mazda B-series 4wds use the same module
2001/2 Explorer sport as well
Wrecking yards often have these

Dorman also sell 3rd party module, IMO, Ford replacement module would be no better than 3rd party for this part

4x4 module is in the passenger side kick panel

Many thanks for the helpful responses.

@ 98ranger, thanks for the suggestion. I reseated the battery negative terminal- but no difference.

@RonD , thanks for the thorough write-up. Before making the purchase, Is there any way to test the module after removal to concluded failure, can we be sure through deduction?
2 things I’ll note:
-Cabin fuse #5 , labeled “4wd Module” is rated for 15A. The fuse in my truck is a 30A(thank u previous owner). This creates a stronger case for module failure.
-I hear relay clicks when turning to 4HI. Could it be the case that the the module has failed but relays are still triggered ?

many thanks again

4WD relays are IN the 4x4 module, behind the passenger kick panel, I would pull the panel and see if that's the relay you hear, only one of the two internal relays should 'click'

If shift motor or its wiring was bad then 4WD lights on dash will flash when you select 4WD, assuming they come on with key on bulb test
Since this doesn't happen the switch or 4x4 module is the issue
Since you do "hear" something when you move the switch then switch is most likely working

So deduction would point to 4x4 module problem, and it was a known issue on 2001-2005 Ranger 4x4's
