I have a 2005 edge 4.0 with automatic 4x4, and tranny if that matters any, but i was driving home yesterday in 4x4, and i came to a turn and i can feel and hear this crazy grinding under my feet as i pull out of the turn. So im like wtf i pull into this area of town houses get out and check my cv's, front diff, front drive shaft and my transfer case and cant visibly see anything wrong. So i get back in and take it out of 4x4 start to drive down the road and the grinding comes back, now its not like a constant grind but it comes in and goes out, sometimes stays for a few seconds and then goes. I tried slowing down and speeding up to see if that would changing anything but nothing. Anyways so i took the back roads home cause i didn't want this thing to lock up on me or something stupid going on the highway cause that would be lame. I get to the back roads and flip my 4x4 back on and after a few bumps from the rough road the grind seems to stop and was fine the rest of the way home on a paved road. So i am stumped as to what it could be i was thinking probably the transfer case being the grinding was right under my feet but im not much of an auto mechanic. So does anyone know of or have had this issue happen to them before? The help would be very much appreciated.

 

Let me guess. You were driving in 4x4 on fairly solid ground?

 

No actually our roads here were pretty icy thats why i put it in 4 wheel drive lol.

Were you driving in 4x4 high/low on pavement at all?

 

Its normal. You were trying to turn with it 4x4. Every truck does it.

 

Usually it bucks when turning and not really a grinding noise. It will clunk and clank from stuff binding but not really what I would call a grinding.

 

Yeah... but it may resemble the sound of grinding. Mine does it right now... but mine has been through alot more hell than most have.

It was in 4hi, never had my truck in 4lo and there was spots of pavement here and there but id say 90% of my drive was on ice or snow. And i know what turning is like with 4x4 on lol its not the first 4x4 truck ive drivin i understand how it all works im just not big on the internal components. It was a serious grinding that made my shorts a little brown lol

 

And it continued to grind in a straight line and after i took it out of 4x4 if you read my original post.

 

possibly maybe had some slush/snow build up... it is canada, the crap gets everywhere. lol!

 

You have lots of moving parts and gears when you are in 4x4. There is going to be some kind of noise. I am pretty sure you have nothing to worry about.

 

K i understand what happens when 4x4 engages, ive probably put 5000 km on the thing in 4x4 and have never heard or felt that happen so im telling you its not a normal sound, or else i wouldnt have even started the thread lol.

possibly that something is not engaging properly in your transfer case, but you did say it continued after you disengaged the 4x. you also said that it stopped after you hit a few bumps.

has it come back since? im leaning towards the fact you had frozen slush stuck somewhere. i had something similar happen in mine and it turned out i had to much crap built up inside the wheel wells and around the front axle.... if your really concerned, drain your transfer case and tranny and check the fluid for metal shavings and gremlins. if you find anything in the fluid, you have something to be possibly concerned about and take appropriate steps from there.

 

i just had a rock get stuck behind the dust shield of my front drive line causing a grind/squeal noise took some compressed air behind the shield and rock popped out and away goes the noise. so after a few bumps you could have had one pop out from around your brakes. but if that doesn't sound like a good enough explanation then being as that yours is an 05 i'd check your wheel bearings and u-joint on the front drive line

 

Im almost certain its not just a fluke thing, it happend again tonight for the second time. After i backed out of my driveway i put it in 4x4 and drove for about 5-10kms on my way to the bank and it came back right in the middle of town, started with a slow quite grinding then it got crazy. Its not really a constant grind like a rock would be stuck somewhere its almost like something is trying to engage but can't finish. It wouldn't be my 4x4 trying to engage would it? cause i was already in it from the start of my drive. Anyways i flipped it back to 2 wheel and the grinding stayed for a bit down the road and then went away. Got home without any more grinding and pulled it into my shop to check everything again and i can not see a problem on the outside so thats why i think its the transfer case. But i will see if i can get into town to get some new oil for the transfer case tomorrow and drain it to see what i can find.
