4x4 thumping

Hello,
This winter when I would switch into 4x4 high on the icy/snow covered,, sometimes my my 4x4 would be slow to engage and when it would engage, once i was driving it would thump/jerk when I got up to 40ish mph.

Any ideas on what would cause this?

Assuming 2003 Ranger V6~4.0L~SOHC + 5r55e Trans + 1354 TCase +...?
Sounds like your 4x4ShiftMotor is getting marginal; these are a NotoriousFailureItem,
especially if you only rarely excercise it thru the 2WHi~4WHi~4WLo cycle & a short drive in each; should be done monthly to keep+confirm it's working.
I'd go ahead & buy a new ShiftMotor in prep for complete failure to shift,
& also do a 33kMile\4Year MerconLV fluid change on the TCase, & lube the DriveShaft SlipJoint sleeve.
Click here for details on the TransferCase+Controls with part numbers.
