4x4 troubles

So my rangers 4x4 has never worked for me. I’ve checked the fuses responsible and all seem fine. When you try and put it into 4x4 it does absolutely nothing. No clicking, no movement, no dash feedback, nothing. Any ideas?

2001 to 2011 Ranger 4x4s used a 4x4CM(control module)
On the 2001-2005 it was a common failure point, it was redesigned in 2006-2011, and was a little better but still failed, and its NOT backwards compatible in any case

They are not cheap, and used is.........well most likely to be bad as well, but you can try one if wrecking yards are near by

Your description would point to the 4x4CM since it has the relays inside that should "click" and it controls the lights on the dash

Your 2001 system has 3 parts
Switch on the dash, never breaks
4x4CM, a known issue
Shift motor on transfer case, can go bad from DISUSE(not over use), but you would hear a "click" and then 4WD dash lights would flash because motor wasn't moving

Out side of the fuses no other systems in the truck are part of the 4x4 system

In 2001 to 2003 the 4x4CM is behind the passenger side kick panel, says 4x4CM on the label
In 2004 and up its behind the radio

I think you can use this one: Dorman 599-252
As the least expensive replacement

You can unplug it and test the connector's 12v wires and grounds, just to make sure it can be powered up

Me and a buddy are going to a few salvage yards near by. How much can I expect to be paying? I’ve never been to one

All anyone can do is guess.
Amazon has the Dorman unit mentioned for < $302.
If the yard says "No Returns on Electric Parts", it'll be cheaper.
If they claim to have tested it and give you any avenue of recourse, it'll be higher.
Enjoy your first trip to a junkyard.

Wrecking yards generally charge 50% of replacement part value, i.e. if a new part is $100 expect to pay $50

On electrical parts they will never do a refund but most will do ONE exchange if a part didn't work, and that's as available, so if you got the last one you will have to wait, or they will usually let you spend the "credit" on other parts

These are, as said, a known failure point so most wrecking yards only have them for a few days when the vehicle first comes in
2001-2005 Ranger OR Mazda B-series 4WD
2001/2002 Explorer Sports Trac 4WD<<<<NOT Explorer, just the Sports Trac model, the 4 door pickup model

For the 2001 TransferCase 4x4ConModule
FordMotorCraft# 1L54-7h417-aa\ab\ac\ad\ae
this series of part numnbers should be compatible.
Do NOT use earlier\later revisions; they're incompatible.

For the 2001 TransferCase 4x4ShiftMotor
Ford# 1f24-17645-a\b
Ford# 1L54-7g360-ca\cb
Ford# 1L5z-7g360-ca\cb
Ford# 2L24-7g360-aa
Ford# yL54-7g360-aa
Ford# yL5z-7g360-aa
CarDone# 48-202
Dorman# 600-926
Apdty# 711918
Any of above part numbers should be compatible.

Click here for more info on the 1354 TransferCase +ConModule +ShiftMotor.

not just yet but it’s so cool to see everyone telling and even SHOWING how to diagnose the issue, buy the parts, and even install them. I don’t have the money to go to a scrapyard just yet.

speaking of such, do you have any guesses on how much that might cost me? Never been to one

Wrecking yards usually change 50% of what a new part costs, some times less
Grab fuses and relays, hand full is cheap, lol, most of those just get tossed
