5 speed to automatic swap?
5 speed to automatic swap?
I have a 93 ranger with a 5 speed. I'm really not aprtial to stick shift and need an automatic for California traffic. Has anyone done this? Can you tell me what I need besides the tranny?
I have a 93 4x4 with a 4.0.
Can i still use the T-case from the 5 speed?

A truck that old, you would be better off selling it or buying something else that is an automatic...
you will need the following parts:
- transmission for a 4wd 4.0
- PCM out of the same year, same engine, w/ auto trans
- engine wiring harness
- transmission wiring harness
- flywheel
- flywheel spacer
- torque converter
- steering column for an auto transmission truck
- gauge cluster insert
- starter
- radiator for an auto transmission truck
- cooling lines
the transfer case will work and so will both driveshafts.....the transmission crossmember is in the same spot....
look to spend about $1500-$2000 on the swap.

Wow ...looks like I'll be rebuilding the stock 5 speed trany...... Thanks alot guys for the good info.
They want about $500 for the new clutch installed.
How easy is it to take out and replace the clutch on this truck?
I have done several older mustangs and am a avid shade tree mechanic. I just built a old chevelle from ground up to give you some idea of my knowledge.
The guy at the shop said it was like 8 hours in the book on this job. I figured it would at least take me a day to do. What do you guys think?

if you can do clutch in a Mustang, you can do it in a Ranger......replacing the clutch should take you about 3-5 hours and about $250 total for a stock clutch and slave cylinder.......
i did my complete automatic to manual transmission swap in about 8 hours....

When I say older mustangs I mean 60's . I also did a 2 wheel drive in my 99 chevy fullsize. Is it sorta the same process?
What scale of diffaculty is it?
I'm asuming its the tranny, because I can hear the bearing spinning on the shaft/plate when its in gear. otherwise it engages fine. I also have to replace 4th gear internal fork. It pops out on me when driving.
Thanks.

on a scale of 1-10 with 10 being the hardest, it is probably a 3 or 4.....it is just time consuming getting the transmission out and back in.......the transmission itself doesn't weight all that much, maybe 75 pounds...
Hey thanks for the heads up on the tranny. Do I have to buy a new slave for it? Is it recomended? I will defenately do this myself then. So the Y pipe is in the way? I may have to pull it and put some new exhaust on then. Thanks guys
